I put new mats in the car yesterday and noticed a little black access panel on the floor of the front passenger seat. Any idea what it is for?

It is not labeled? The VIN is stamped in the body directly below the cover. It should also be mentioned someplace in your owners manual. Why it's there, who knows? The only thing I could think of is it may be required in Japan. They are left hand drive there our passenger side is their drivers side and though our cars are right hand drive, that plate carried over to US spec. cars?
