Lock Running Vehicle

    When I have animals in the car and I need to stop at a rest stop I want to lock the car but leave it running for the A/C. My neighbors can do that with their vehicles but when I try my Prius v 2013 beeps several times and does not lock. Is there something special I need to be doing?

    I need drive about 1,200 miles so I need to figure this out. It's too hot to leave animals in the vehicle without the A/C.

    You can lock it manually, use the metal key to lock and unlock

    #1-Put car in park (and parking brake preferably) and then roll down your drivers window.

    #2-Get out of the car and close the door.

    #3-Reach inside the drivers window of the door you just closed and touch the lock button.

    #4-Move you hand over to the window switch and pull it up and remove your arm from the window in one fluid motion.

    Then to get back in the car later, Use the metal key. So yeah don't forget your Fob /key inside the car while doing this...

    That's just silly.
    All you need is the mechanical key. With the system set to lock all doors with the driver's door, use the key to lock it. You'll have to use the mechanical key to get back in again.

    With the older gen2 cars, the mechanical door keys were just your average normal key you can make at Home Depot. Many people would just make another physical key for $2 and use it for that purpose.

    But with the gen3 cars, Toyota for some reason went with a laser cut key for the door, and replacement is about $100. I can't think why they would do such a crazy thing for a door key.....only opens the door and nothing else.

    Thanks. I attempted to use the metal key. It only goes in about halfway and does not turn. I got out the spare key. The metal key in it is quite different. Now I understand the laser reference. It works. I'm good.

    Should I be thinking the dealer gave me a bad key and I should get a replacement? (Not from my dealer. They are the pits.)

    Did you buy the car new? Both keys should be the same, unless 1 is a replacement that's not original to the car

    Toyota certified used... So what do I do to get a working metal key? Who makes them?

    The dealer can cut one with the key code. May locksmiths can too.

    Hmmm. And the dealer should have the key code, right? I did ask for that some time back (after reading something here) and they went all stupid on me, no idea where I'd get that. I guess I'm going to have to play hardball.

    I had a great Toyota dealer where I used to live. After I moved here I bought the Prius from the local dealer. I think they are marginal at best. Rude. Etc. There is one 30 miles in the opposite direction. They have issues which are under investigation... This must be a bad place for Toyota dealers. Not really sure what to do. This group has helped me a lot. As for the key, I've had it a year, never really looked at it because I didn't need it. There were other issues with the Toyota certified but I caught them and made them fix them. It was a struggle but I won.

    If you can stomach $134, you can get a completely new lock cylinder and two keys, which solves your problem and also addresses any concern about the former keys to your car being in somebody else's possession.

    That used to be a pretty drastic thing to do because you might have to change four or five lock cylinders to have everything match new keys, but now that there's really just one mechanical lock cylinder in the whole car....

    Since the car is certified used, just bring it back to the samene dealer and get the key cut. That's probably a new key fob. They should be able to do it for free

    Sounds like OP got two fobs already, but they came with two different mechanical keys. (Hmm, does either one of the mechanical keys work, or are they both different and both wrong?)

    So just getting mechanical keys cut and keeping them in the existing fobs ought to do the trick ... the keys cost a lot less than the fobs.

    I got two fobs. Upon inspection a couple days ago the keys are different. One is uncut. The problem is getting the dealer to do it. They denied knowing the number, acted like they had never heard of such thing. I spoke to two different people. I was told no one else was available and, of course, no one returned phone calls. Would anyone but the dealer have the number?
    Not to mention someone to install it...

    The parts department would know. I would take it up with the sales manager since this is certified used

    CPO or Certified Pre-Owned used to be a pretty good deal.
    However (comma!) you have to be careful that it's a FACTORY CPO instead of some kind of third party "coverage."

    How do you tell the difference?
    That's a very good question, considering that used car salespeople have a difficult relationship with the truth.
    Generally speaking, unless the OEM is backing the CPO program the only thing that "Certified Pre-Owned" means is that it's Certified to have been Previously Owned.
    If a dealership sold me a car with 2 operable keyfobs but no operable keys I would give them a chance to rectify the problem, and then I would start working my way up the food chain, and I'd also become their social media nightmare.

    WHEN (not if) the 12v Aux battery fails in the car, then the metal keylet is going to become a little more important.

    Everything has that logo on it so I assume it is but it is true about their relationship with truth. I do understand the need for getting this resolved.
    He is one who didn't return the call (although he is "always" available and "this is my cell phone"). Would another Toyota dealer be able to look up the number? If I were stranded in another state would the dealer be able to look it up using the VIN? I maybe be able to get one to do that, then go to my dealer here with the information in hand.
