So this is where I’m vacationing this weekend: Where the word “MICHIGAN” is located. Motel room getting a little chilly tonight. What is the inverse of a ‘snow bird’? Heat relief. Bob Wilson
Looking at average temperatures of Michigan's peninsula - that looks pretty much ...... well ...... average. What's going on up there?
i wouldn't mind some of that myself. too hot here, too humid, and otherwise too cold. what were the pilgrims thinking?
The Michigan Tesla Owners Club did a “Batteries over the Mackinaw Bridge’ event. I wanted to thank them for their excellent 2025 Meetup in June. And let them meet this Dixie engineer. I promised a copy of my trip report. The backside of the high pressure came in and baked everyone in this afternoon. Doesn’t matter, caught a midday snack in bar and grill. Probably waiting until an hour after sunset before heading home. Bob Wilson
Hot and humid combined is what people might vacation away from. I favor the 'dewpoint' overlay on windy.com to see that. The 'wet bulb temperature' overlay uses a narrower color palette. Hot and humid combined is what interferes with thermoregulation by water evaporation. Interestingly plants and (many) animals both do this, but plants do better in hot and humid than hot and dry. They are stuck in place. Replacing evaporated water requires a lot of tubing (called xylem) and it fails when most needed. If soils are dry, water supply is lacking in the first place. Readers might be surprised to learn that some perfectly sensible biology PhD's don't understand this. But I can't name names...
what's up with the massive swings in temperature this summer, is anyone else seeing up to 25 degree swings over the course of a few days?
There are deeper dives into mechanisms behind flips in the 'science for public' arena. Really deep in the Journal Nature Communications https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-025-58544-5 Published 2025 April. Let your curiosity command your efforts. Bob gets a 'bye' being on vacation and looking for Craps Casinos in Michigan.
When the building A/C is too cold and my fingers are about to turn blue, it is a relief to step outside into the 'sauna' and get to a happy place when I reach the almost too hot to touch car. Bob Wilson
