Funny, I just filled up on Saturday with exactly 320 miles between fill-ups. This is my second fill after the full tank that came from the dealer. The MFD said I got 49 mpg but the car took 5.482 gallons to fill which is just over 58mpg. I'm suspicious that it may have clicked off early but I was filling the tank pretty slowly.

 

Using gas pump calulations is not accurate unless you average the numbers over many fillups.
Each gas pump clicks off at a different point, plus the prius flexible fuel cell changes volume with temperature.

The MFD gives you accurate MPG calculations because it knows exactly how much fuel is being delivered to the engine injectors and the distance traveled. There is still a little possible error with variances in the rolling circumference of the tires, but it's much more accurate than gas pump calculations.

Enjoy the car. The warm weather really helps the MPG even more.

That makes sense to me. My first tank was 48 point something according to the MFD and the pump calculation was about two MPG more.

Next weekend we take our first roadtrip of about 400 miles (mostly highway) so I'll be interested to see what MPG number I can hit for that trip.

 

It is awesome. I had mine since April 29th, have done 1850 miles on it and have saved over $30/week.

 

dont forget to pump some air in them tires, no kidding the ride doesn't change much going 44 F 42 R, but you will gain significant MPG.
