Wow - Mercedes had always taken a weird sort of pride in their guzzler status. Good to see them entering the 21st century. Still, I won't hold my breath to see if they actually ramp up hybrids.

How can a E-class be mainstream one day?

E-Class? Mainstream? I was thinking Peugeot as well for the diesel hybrid. Citroen's come out with one too so the E-Class is the 3rd.

Also, anyone noticed how "poor" mileage the gas-electric hybrid gets compared to the diesel hybrid? It's like they're favouring the diesel!

American and European test results might be getting compared. The gas numbers are stated for the US cycle. The article doesn't specify which cycle for the diesel.

Interesting. I wonder if someone has either made a mistake (1.9kwh?) or they've slipped up and let out more than they should have! ;)

    (Isn't the Leaf a 24kwh battery?)

crazy misunderstanding, the mereceds has a 20kw motor, maybe they mean the battery has 19kw of power, but thats probably still wrong and its 20kw.

Mercedes Bringing E400 Hybrid And E300 Bluetec Hybrid To Detroit
Lithium can use a wider state of charge than nimh, so this is likely equivalent to a prius capacity battery. It is in a much bigger heavier vehicle though, so the battery is undersized to do prius like duty:)

In other words if you want a Mercedes E diesel this is the one to get, unfortunately it won't be sold in the US, but the E400 will. The E hybrids will compete with the Lexus GS hybrids, the BMW activehybrid 5, and Infiniti M hybrid.

0.8kwh is dissapointing... Did they have Bluetec 250CDI before? I need to check on that.
4.2l/100km is impressive figure, only question is how will it do in real world... I would think that if it does 6l/100km it would be great... it also shows how bad are EU cycle tests these days.

Yes it is sold in europe, and got 53mpg on the euro combined cycle. For comparison epa
New York: Mercedes E250 Bluetec concept would get 39 mpg highway
From the increases on the e400, I would project the E300 diesel hybrid to get 33city/40 highway. The nice thing about the mercedes system is they can easily add it to any of their cars.

For comparison the much faster gasoline 2013 lexus gs hybrid is projected to get 29 city/ 33 highway. But if someone is really concerned about fuel economy they can trade down and get a tch, ffh, or hsh that has better gasoline mileage than the mercedes diesel. Or .... even the prius

True and they are. 56mpg (4.2L/100km) is under the Euro test cycle. We also hope they did the correct conversion because 4.2L1/00km is close to the 2nd Gen Prius' number (4.1L/100km combined in Canada, 4.5L/100km in Germany, 4.3L/100km in the UK)

i've been waiting to see a good diesel hybrid.. it only makes sense to me. everyone thinks "electric motors with gas engine" so they compliment each other.. one does low.. the other does high... in a diesel, diesel can do just about anything it wants.. low or high... but feeds off low with it's great torque... well.. now it works less.. and the electric side won't work as hard either because the diesel is going to be trying to pump out power.... a win win in my opinion... it's all about the efficiency curves imo

i've been thinking about diesel hybrids for a long time... i even have an idea for a big rig diesel hybrid.. although it would double the cost of the truck... but.... if an electric motor (more like many) can move the truck up to even 15mph.. that's a great load taken off the ICE.

    back to topic...
