    it wouldn't be surprising if someone came up with a better system that negated the billions spent on current tech and the rR&d that preceded it.

    So? I thought that the original DARPA autonomous vehicle challenges, predating the modern self-driving car movement, included unmapped roads and even off-road segments.

    Judging from the steering wheel displacement, the MIT car does seem to be weaving back and forth quite a bit as it goes down that country road!

    I remember watching the 2005 & 2007 challenges on I think the Discovery channel. It was very interesting.
