Mobileye C2-270 vs. "Bell the Hybrid"

I have known that accident avoidance systems are the way we have to go. Automated systems to improve driver performance is the sure way to improved safety. So I was pleasantly surprised to find an after-market system, the C2-270 by Mobileye:

Amsterdam, February 10th, 2010 - As state legislators across the United States enact laws that ban phoning or texting while driving, Mobileye has put its focus on creating the technology which can assist a driver regardless of the distraction. The Collision Prevention System, available on the Mobileye C2™ product line or with Mobileye’s OEM partners (Volvo, BMW, GM and others), allows multiple vision processing algorithms known as Driver Assistance Systems, DAS, running simultaneously to be added to the system.

Each DAS monitors another aspect of the driving scene, and together they function as a safeguard for the driver and passengers. Some examples of DASes include Lane departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Headlamp Control, Pedestrian Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition and more.

A recent study by the Highway Data Loss Institute finds no reduction in the number of crashes after legislation has been past, banning the use of a hand-held phone while driving. Other studies, like the TNO Report on Accident Prevention Systems from 2009, clearly show the effectiveness of Mobileye’s Collision Prevention System on the road.

Mobileye’s new platform with multiple DASes has a 98% success rate - and can give the driver up to 3 seconds of early warnings before a possible rear-end collision occurs. Studies show that 90% of rear-end collisions can be prevented if the driver receives 1.5 seconds of advance warning before the collision takes place.

The C2-270 detects pedestrians.

Los Angeles, April 27, 2010 – Mobileye Inc., a global pioneer and leader in life saving, vision-based driver assistance systems and analytics for leading automotive manufacturers and suppliers, today announced it has signed a retail distribution agreement with Whitney Automotive Group, parent of JC Whitney & Co. (ATV Parts & ATV Accessories - UTV Parts - JCWhitney.com), one of the country’s largest auto parts retailers.

The agreement calls for Mobileye’s aftermarket accident avoidance systems to be made available for purchase through the retailer’s online distribution channels and direct-to-consumer automotive aftermarket brands. Whitney Automotive Group manages the J.C. Whitney brand, Car Parts, Truck Parts, Auto Accessories: Just Great Parts Cheap at CarParts.com, and Truck Accessories | Pickup Truck Accessories & Truck Performance Parts | Stylin' Trucks, as well as private label e-commerce offerings for other national retailers.

JC Whitney reports the C2-270, the pedestrian sensitive version, will be available July 17 with an initial order of 400 units.

The newly formed alliance comes as the rate of accidents and on-road fatalities caused by driver distraction reaches unprecedented levels. In response, the partnership will provide Mobileye customers with immediate access to InstallerNet's nationwide network of more than 1,500 installation facilities in addition to Mobileye’s existing dealer network. Receiving comprehensive training and certified testing on all Mobileye aftermarket technologies, those professionals will be readily available for any driver or fleet interested in incorporating Mobileye’s breakthrough accident-avoidance and risk mitigation systems into their vehicle.

"InstallerNet" lists Costco, Walmart, and Sears as their performing organizations. The JC Whitney representatives didn't know this and speculated that it might be installed at the dealer. Regardless, I'm not having much luck finding an installation guide.
