Astonishing accident involving eight Ferraris 'world's most expensive car crash' - Telegraph

I'm curious how the prius became part of this group.

    Could this be a clue?

"It is thought the crash occurred when the lead driver hit a central barrier after losing control of their Ferrari while trying to overtake in wet conditions."

The cause of the crash isn't hard to come by, although the japanese authorities won't say how fast the cars were going.

    Eight Ferraris Crash at

Wet conditions, 60 year old driver, skids during a lane change and his convoy wrecks. I posted that other article as a friend put it on fb, and there were comments about the prius being in a convoy of such expensive cars.

In this instance, it's best to be last:

"The cars involved included at least two Ferrari F430s (one was the race-ready Scuderia, these days worth more than $400,000), two Ferrari 360 Modenas (each worth almost $200,000), two Ferrari F355s (each worth about $150,000) and a Lamborghini Diablo (one of the most expensive supercars of the 1990s and still likely worth upwards of $200,000). There was also a Nissan GT-R - the only current Japanese supercar - while the cheapest invovled in the crash was a Toyota Prius hybrid, worth closer to $20,000."

At first, I thought this isn't hybrid news until I read further into the quote... Over at my350z.com, the thread title is "Dead! 8 Ferraris, 3 Benzes, a Lambo, and a Prius". :)

I believe the Prius was not a part of the sports car group.
JP media reports they were going approx 150km/h (93mph) on the 80km/h (50mph) speed limit road.

It was reported on Global News (Canada) that the lead car was attempting to pass the Prius. He was going WAY too fast, on tires that are not rated for wet conditions. The Prius was in the "slow lane" (left lane in Japan). They were reported to be headed to a car show.

Too much money, too little skill/brains. ;)

Judging by the above reports, they were driving side by side at nearly double the speed limit, on slicks in the rain. It's a wonder more people weren't killed.

One of the very first lessons in motorcycle school, once you can miss all the pylons, is NOT riding side by side - there's simply no room to maneuver.

I would of thought the US media would pick up on this and make the headline "PRIUS CAUSES EXPENSIVE CRASH", with a small article explaining.

Report said slick (wet) roads, nothing about tread type.

Yup, staggered formation gives one the most room for avoidance maneuvers.

As I alluded to in post #2, I suspected the trigger was the Prius being overtaken at a high rate of speed. And, no, the irony is not lost on me.;)

And judging by some of the pictures, and reports of minor bumper damage, it was the Prius that drove home that day!

Uh, nobody was "killed". There were reportedly minor injuries, including bruises.

This is exactly why I sold my 1993 Mazda RX-7. My reaction times were increasing and its' performance wasn't. It was "slightly modified", producing 325 HP in a 2800 lb vehicle that could pull one G in a corner.

That 60 year old businessman should have done the same.

Can the OP PLEASE re-title the thread? After all - there have been 100 and 200+ car pile-ups over the decades. Since Enzo's cars can NOT equal any sort of value of those injuries / damages / car values - it might seems more proper to put the Ferrari loss as maybe somewhere "up there" . . . but by no means, is it the "most expensive crash". Granted, the media might play it that way:
