Does anybody frequent a Murphy USA station in your Wal-Mart parking lot? Murphy Oil is doing the coolest thing. They just pledged $50 Million Dollars to pay for college tuition(up to 5 years) for all high school graduates from our local school district for the next 20 years. How cool is that!

I'm not a regular. I do gas up at a Murphy station in North Austin on occasion. I mainly put Shell into my car, since that's the most convenient station to my house.

That rocks. Is Murphy headquartered in your Arkansas town? (I know Wal-Mart is headquartered in Bentonville.)

It's my usual refueling station and I have a favorite pump (fills to the same level each time). That's alot of money and a heck of a commitment...why El Dorado, Ar?

Isn't Ark. the home of Wal Mart? That is a lot of money, though, good news!

Sure, but why El Dorado...why not the home town of Bentonville for instance? El Dorado's not really close to Bentonville. I'm not familiar with any recent catastrophy in that area to warrant extreme financial assistance, etc. I mean, why not make a $50 millon scholarship program donation to needy students around the entire state? Or just make it to the Univ. of Arkansas and let them distribute based upon need/worthiness? It just seem an unusual way to donate and a bit of an odd town to donate to (did a month rotation in El Dorado once as a student).

Sounds like the oil company is trying to revitalize El Dorado in particular. Not sure to what extent they're based there although the story calls El Dorado Murphy's home town. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,245639,00.html

EDIT: it also looks like they're in the final stages of settling a class action suit regarding St. Bernard Parish (I would assume that dates from Katrina). http://www.laed.uscourts.gov/MurphyOil/MurphyOil.htm

    EDIT2: or perhaps this http://www.murphyoilcorp.com/ir/katrina/pd...mary_notice.pdf
A settlement has been reached in the class action lawsuit about
the oil spill at Murphy Oil USA’s refinery in Meraux, St. Bernard
Parish, Louisiana, shortly after Hurricane Katrina. The settlement
is valued at $330,126,000 for the acquisition of properties,
remediation of damage, and compensation for losses including the
money paid to those who previously settled with Murphy. It also
allows those who “opted out” earlier in this case to rejoin the class
so that they too can get a payment from the settlement.

El Dorado is the home of Murphy Oil. It's founders and major stockholders are from here. Yes, it is an effort to revitilize the community. Murphy has long been a proponent of education. For years, they have given cash reward to students who did well on their ACT/SAT tests.

As for why only in El Dorado School District? I do not know, Maybe big impact in small town vs. small impact spread out over the state. You can check out the details at: www.eldoradopromise.com

Ok, that makes sense...if it's the location of Murphy Oil then I can understand keeping the money at home, being a 'good neighbor' in the community, etc.
