    1st link dead for me.

The story I read said the ship had just been unloaded, and then loaded up again…

So, the Korean made cars got in. Kia builds Tellurides, Sorentos and Optimas in Georgia, apparently this batch is getting an extra rinse cycle.

    Hmmm.
    Dead link for me too.

Loaded up with what, I wonder?
My first impression was that she had offloaded cargo in GA and gotten under way without being properly ballasted down.
Car haulers usually do not have very much return cargo.
This would be very surprising for a South Korean wessel (Flagged in the Marshall Islands) since they're usually pretty squared away, plus the not-so-Golden Ray is a pretty new ship, being built in 2017.

    Still.
    People forget.

The sea can be very unforgiving, and no matter how new your boat is (Titanic) or how big (Seawise Giant) if you're not good AND lucky you can still be consigned to DJ's locker.

Loss of propulsion + Hurricane = SS El Faro.
    Almost every time.

I hope the Coasties fine the bejebers out of the ship's home office for the cleanup.

    Fun Fact:
The captain of the wessel can (and usually WILL) be personally responsible for the minimum five-figure fine for a petrol spill and lest people forget, this ESPECIALLY applies to for-real US Navy squids as well. The Petty Officer who cites a Navy skipper for this sin probably gets a spot promotion.
Probably number four or five on the top ten list of unpardonable sins on a US Navy ship would be to pump or spill petroleum overboard, and usually there are a dozen or so prominent brass and enamel placards strategically placed to remind the forgetful.

All crew out is latest I read. Before that it was "Three rescued, one remains". Seemed like poor wording, as "remains" as a noun has ~opposite meaning.

Unless the Petty Officer was responsible for the spill, or knew about it and didn't stop it, etc. Skippers don't operate any valves or connect things that cause spills, that is done by the crewmembers.

All due respect, that's not how command at sea works.
That's probably not really how it works in the MV world either, but I only have direct experience swinging valves on hulls with a commissioning pennant flying at the masthead.

    The captain is 100-percent responsible.
    Financially.
    Legally.
    Morally.

It doesn't really matter WHO operates the valve, starts the fire, kicks rudder over at the wrong time, or doesn't tie down the cargo.
Since you always know who is ultimately in charge, you always know who gets the blame when things go pear-shaped.

Remember however that the Coasties are only the fuzz.
They only arrest the polluter and haul them into court.
Following the Exxon Valdez incident Captain Joseph Hazelwood was infamously cleared of felony charges, despite being ALL THE WAY at-fault for the spill. He was convicted of a misdemeanor of negligent discharge of oil, for which he performed community service.

    BUT....he DID face charges.

Between the two of us, one is qualified for command at sea.

Well if you wear the gold star as a breast insignia and we disagree about legal, moral and financial responsibilities that come with command at sea, then I guess we'll just have to leave it there.

I'm glad I'm a US Navy Chief, retired.

I saw another article on the rescue, which added the detail that the ship was headed for Baltimore next.

So maybe they dropped off some Korean-made cars and parts for assembly in Georgia, and loaded up some Georgia-made Kias to head north?

I was very glad to hear that they got the last four guys out. One was stuck in a compartment with no access to food or water for 36 hours, and they said the entire ship interior was “hotter” than the 92°F ambient outdoor temp yesterday.
