My 2005 Prius is dead. How do I diagnose the problem?

    My 2005 Prius is dead. The most I can get out of it is an intermittent red light on the power button on the dash. The scanner does not get enough power to get a read. I bought a new auxiliary 12v battery from the dealer to no avail. Any thoughts?

    Check the voltage at the jump points under the hood. You could have a bad battery cable.

    check the battery connections as well, especially negative to ground. and even though the battery is new, it might be defective, or just need a charge.

    ... and if checking there doesn't find you the problem, just move your meter around and check other spots. The power-distribution section in the wiring diagram will help you pick good spots. In the diagram, you'll also spot which fuses might be likely suspects, and could be partitioning the distribution tree into branches that have power and branches that don't. Weird behaviors ensue.
