New year's resolutions are notoriously hard to keep and often broken. So I may or may not be able to stick to this one. But I'm going to give it a try:

My resolution is to quit replying to trolls.

Between now and the end of the month, I'll try to extricate myself (perhaps gradually) from the one or two threads begun by a troll that I'm already posting in. And after that I'll make an effort to resist the temptation.

I will continue to discuss controversial topics, and reply to people with opposing viewpoints. Most of the people I disagree with are not trolls. Most of them honestly disagree and present their arguments in a manner consistent with the spirit of PC. But a very few have nothing to say but name-calling, or mire their substantive views in a sludge of name-calling, and these I will attempt to avoid.

My new year's resolution: Don't feed the trolls. Anyone caring to join me in this will be most welcome.

I don't do new year resolutions...but this is one i could get behind.
Just think of how many starving children in Africa we could feed with all the food we give the trolls here!

My New Year's resolutions are (1) to organize my office at work (kind of dull but necessary) (2) sharpen my memory, esp. get better at remember friends' birthdays and (3)... I know there was a third one, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Yeah, I've heard memory is the second thing to go. I can't remember what the first one was.

I've resolved to get more exercise.

My new year's resolution is to save more money, exercise more, and to remember to replace the ribbon in my keyboard.

    Nice idea, Daniel, but . . .

I think it is very appropriate when one of our moderators or our more senior, experienced and knowledgeable PC members provides a direct (if not polite) response pointing out the troll's scribble. This has the benefit of keeping us newbies from getting too excited by the troll's efforts.

my news years wish is to have more patience with people in front of me sending smoke signals at stop lights...

help my SO to lower her carbon footprint...(she needs a LOT of help even with now driving the Prius as her primary vehicle!!)

gain another point of view. this is something i have attempted to do for the past several years now. i tend to think i know it all (obviously not the case) so i always try to see something from another perspective hoping it will give me a better understanding this conundrum called "mankind"

Maybe. But that may be seen as encouragement by the troll. Anyway, I don't really care too much if trolls and humans use up bandwidth arguing. My problem is personal: I get sucked in and then I get angry, and that does neither me nor anybody else any good. My resolution is for my own health and peace of mind. I'll debate issues, but I'll try not to get into shouting matches with trolls who just spew bull. (Note that I distinguish between a reasoned argument for a point I disagree with, on the one hand, and the sort of mindless name-calling and simple untruths that characterize a troll.)
