2011 Four - I changed both the engine air and the cabin air filters this week. Since then I am getting random chimes. These are low in volume and are in no way related to the obnoxious beeps from the seat belt and reverse warnings. Some of these chimes start out like the familiar pattern that some clocks make prior to ringing out the hours. Some of the chimes are only 2 or 3 notes long. There does not seem to be any pattern as to when these chimes come. There are no indications on the display panel. I am stumped.

Good try. That was the first thing I checked. Any other ideas?

You leaving anything remotely heavy on the seat? Park brake accidentally on?

Park brake or the switch. It can be on by only one click which won't usually drag but will bring on the chimes.

Something heavy (or heavier than you thought) on the passenger seat?

    Record it, post the video.

Got an arch-nemesis? Maybe it was something like this.

I have checked out all the suggestions. The "heavy" object in passenger seat doesn't solve it. It has happened both with the seat empty and with my wife sitting in it

The parking brake is not "on". I have set and released it a number of times.

The "hidden chimes device" does not seem to be a possibility since no one has access to the car but me and my wife. She is definitely not the type that would hide an annoyance like that.

I'm not sure how I could record and post it. It happens randomly, like once a day or maybe not at all during a day.

I’m not sure how or why the GPS would make this type of sound.

I appreciate all the suggestions. I am convinced that it has something to do with my changing the engine oil and cabin air filters. It never happened before the changes. I have driven the car over a year. I did have the dealership rotate tires and change oil a while ago but this problem only started after I did the filter changes.

    All suggestions are appreciated.

why don't you record the sound so we don't have to keep guessing.

I'm not sure how I could record and post it. It happens randomly, like once a day or maybe not at all during a day. Also the pattern of the notes (I am a musician), both tone and rhythm changes from one occurrence to the next.

If you don't want to "guess" any more, then don't. I am posting to find an answer. I'm hoping that someone has had this happen after changing filters. I have reset the engine air intake to make sure that the filter is properly sealed. The fact that there are no display warnings lead me to believe that these chimes are not related to any engine problem. I can't imagine that the cabin air filter would have any sensor that could trigger these chimes. All I know is, before the filter changes there were no chimes. After the filter changes, there are chimes.

I plan to try to check out the GPS idea today.

I'm just taking guesses since you're trying to solve something, but could it be that you have a certain setting on? Lane Keep Assist, DRCC, any of those options?

Thanks to everyone for their ideas.

The solution, so far, is still "out there".

The sound is definitely a "chime" and not something that could be caused by air rushing or passing through an orifice. I played oboe in band and definitely know that this is not some instrument sound. The sound at times is definitely the common prelude that many bell towers make prior to chiming out the hours. However, at time the chime is only two or three notes, all the same pitch.

I plan to test all the possible ventilation settings today since this did start with the replacement of the cabin air filter. The problem is that the chime is so random, and there are so many ventilation combinations, I may still be testing when I trade the 2011 in on a new 2015 model!

... and why is it you don't ask a mechanic or someone at the dealership?
I mean someone who could actually hear this "chime"?

The factory GPS has "audio icons" that sound off when you approach a particular location. I have a chime set on the chocolate factory just north of Stockton on I5 :D. Saves all sorts of accusations from my wife that I drove past it without telling her...

Once again, the chimes are very, very, random. Some days I do not hear them at all. I'm not sure I could get someone at the dealership to ride with me all day just with a "chance" that the chimes would sound while they are in the car.

I'm trying to access the GPS thing. I have not knowingly set anything to alert me when approaching any particular location. Also the fact that the sound is not the same every time make me wonder if this could even be a remote possibility.

I continue to appreciate all attempts to solve this.
