There are three "ages" of Prii:
    • The first generation Prius, "Mark 1", sold only in Japan in the late 90s.
    • The second generation "Prius Classic", sold everywhere (including the US) from 2000-2003.
    • The third generation Prius, currently being sold.

      • The question is, what's the best/most commonly used name each "generation" of Prii?

We've been calling the third (current) generation Prius the "'04 Prius" -- but that doesn't work any longer, since the '05s are out (and are identical to the '04s, with the exception of price and whatever interal manufacting improvements were made over the last year).

The second generation is easier -- most people refer to it as the Prius Classic (at least in the US); I'd leave it with that moniker.

The first generation is rarely mentioned in America -- I've heard most people refer to it as the "Prius MK1" (Mark 1) or "first generation Prius"; either of those work for me.

So, what would you name the current, 3rd generation Prius?

I think points should go for something that is (a) accurate and (B) get used (at least on PriusChat).

Maybe something from Latin origins, like "Prius" itself.

I sort of like "Prius Mark III" myself.

"Go Speed Racer... Go Speed Racer... Go Speed Racer, Go!"

(I know, I know... "Mach V", not "Mark III". Plus, the Prius doesn\'t come with a trunk monkey.)

I've also heard the mark I referred to as "original" or the original prius.

Since it's a techie car, how about Prius version 3.0 - or v3 for short?

I sort of like V3. And then add the year on the end of that. So I have a V3.4 and now they are making the V3.5 edition.

I was also thinking that now since it's the first year to qualify as a mid-sized car we could just call it the mid-sized hatchback Prius. It's not flashy, but it's true.

Then again, we could just use the full name:
    Propelled
    Rightously
    In
    Ubercool
    Synergy

Just hope it doesn't lead to the Prius getting even bigger. I'd hate it if the V4 Prius was the "Full-Sized Old Person's Land Shark Prius".
 Excellent - I always enjoyed the 60's fictional spy organization acronyms (U.N.C.L.E., S.H.I.E.L.D., Z.O.W.I.E.).

I find it the easiest to use G1/G2/G3 for the generation, and model year for itself (if needed). For example, my Prius will be a G3 Prius, or a G3/05 Prius. Simple.

dunnow 'boutthe others. but the '04/05 gen... lends itself to SFB04 and SFB05.

Squashed FootBall.... yeah it's US-Centric... sorry.

I've been partial to classic/year for 1st gen to hit US and nextgen/year
    for the current crop

This morning I was in the shower and had a thought. I Realized it was nothing a little soap can't fix and then this thread popped into my mind.

Is this the first year Toyota has referred to the Hybrid Synergy Drive? Could this be the "Prius HSD" generation?

In the future, even if they stick with HSD technology, it might become so prevalent that they no longer refer to it. Think of the items in regular cars that used to be cutting edge but are now not even mentioned.

As for referencing the year, I'm not convinced it's necessary since references to Prius Classics include the model year only when required for technical reference.

That could get really ugly. You'll end up with V3.4.1.1 or V3.4.2.3 etc, depending on how many TSBs you have applied! ;-)

it will also be the Hylander HSD and the Camray HSD and the Lexus HSD. 2k1, 2k2, 2k3, 2k4, and now k25 and as and as were so early into the 2 part of the model years we could probably deleat it making it k1,k2,k3,k4,k5.

I will start referring to Priapus by the following easy to understand and remember naming convention:
    2k4-Prius-Mark III-HSD-BC7-V3.40D/E-JB/SFB

The beauty is in the simplicity.

Tony, I can't spot any reference to which state it was bought in? And the color code?
