Doesn't surprise me and doesn't upset me. Many people, particularly intelligent and/or high ranking types (and being an astronaut is pretty high in the scheme of things) have the ability to "mask" their emotions.

There are LOTS of posters here who mis-read ME. We had two officers kill themselves during my 26 yrs on the force....no one predicted either one.

This is a non-issue and should have been a non-story.

I guess every basket has a bad apple, but that definitely does not make the whole bunch bad.

Historically, the Russians have kept tighter monitors on the condition of the ones going up - NASA is going to follow suit.

They need to look at their personel closer.

I'm certainly not demanding perfection, just after a few posts this week suggest "if you are not zero emissions - you're not green".

many people are great at masking their emotional/mental state. i'm one of them, most of the time.

this goes for a variety of tendencies and instabilities. some depressives are great at masking their situation until someone finds them post-suicide. look at the typical abusive spouse... nobody outside the immediate family believes they're anything but the most upstanding citizen. it's all about maintaining an exterior shell that people believe. this is nothing new.
