Nebraska power plant being converted from coal to hydrogen

    Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has announced an innovative change in one of their plants by converting the coal-fired boiler at its Sheldon Station plant to hydrogen -- a zero-net emissions fuel.

    "The hydrogen will be produced by Monolith Materials as a co-product from its production of carbon black using natural gas as a feedstock," the utility said in a statement. "The collaborative undertaking is expected to create good paying jobs at the site and enable NPPD to continue to generate and deliver affordable, reliable and sustainable energy to Nebraskans."

    Sounds like an efficient use of a potential waste product. It should be an overall improvement in air quality for the area. Making carbon black isn't exactly a clean process in any sense, but a new plant will be built to the latest regulations, and the older power plant will stop burning coal.

    I wonder what the fuel efficiency difference would be in using hydrogen compared to NG directly in the power plant as is, and is it a full renovation of the power plant with new direct burn turbines, or simply a conversion of the boiler.

    An industrial fuel cell would have been sweet. Perhaps they could have sold California the water from it.:)
