Need MAC help!

    I love my new macbook and I want to dump the windows machine but I am totally frustrated by 1 problem.
    I can't get my HP laserjet 1000 to work.
    tried the foo2 drivers from linux with no luck... hp has been no help. It's a great utility printer that I really don't want to replace.

    I know there are many MAC experts out there... please let me know if you think you can help.

    Are you new to Mac OS?

    Do you know about the print set up in the Utilities? If the Mac doesn't have an HP driver you should be able to set it up with a generic driver.

    I had no luck getting the linux driver to work. the instructions are horrible. there are 3 parts, maybe I did not install them in the proper order.

    The other threads lead to dead ends...Zenographics is no longer available and the SDKmono on shout.net is similarly gone?!?!?!?

    thanks for your suggestions! there is some good help out there!

    I got the sdk mono to work. It's a bit slow but it works !

    Linux drivers won't work. Although Mac OS X is unix based, like linux, the kernel is completely different, as is the binary format. I don't know if any of them are compatible (it seems likely), but 10.5 Leopard has a bunch of HP LaserJet 10x0 series drivers, just none for the 1000 specifically. But usually a "series" are all interchangeable.

    That's good news. I won't have this problem when I buy the imac with leopard.

    Oh, also, supposedly (I haven't had occasion to try it) Leopard can use the normal Software Update mechanism to locate and update printer drivers for you. That might help if the 10x0 series drivers don't work.

    The problem is that HP never marketed (and made drivers for) the HP1000 for the Mac. She is stuck with 3rd party drivers. The HP1000 is an old parallel port printer.

    barbara, i know its a pain, but take it to the apple store. they will hook you up. if you just got the mac book, you have FREE tech support for the first ...well, its been 4 years since my last Mac purchase, but its like 90 days or more of free support, take advantage of it!!

    you call, make an appointment and you get one on one face to face help. go with a list of things you want to do...

    I may do that when I buy the desktop. will want to network the 2.
    waiting for the macworld to happen and see if I am getting a tax refund or not.
    finally got all my email accounts working and figured out how to import my address books so it's one small step at a time.....:)

    I can highly recommend the Apple tech support. The wait is sometimes a bit too long, but the people at the other end are friendly, knowledgeable, and usually speak English. The extended care warranty (AppleCare Protection Plan) is also a good idea, giving you access to the help line for 3 years instead of 90 days.

    Is it a generic PostScript and/or PCL box, or one of those
    abortions where the host computer has to do all the bitmap
    processing? If the former, you could probably tell the mac that
    it's a different, albeit similar, HP printer, and go to town.
