What is the best way to put the Prius in neutral?

Unless I'm misunderstanding the question, I'd think the answer would be to push the shifter knob to the "N" position.

Is there a reason this wouldn't be true?

Just push the lever over toward the N and hold it there for a second. It will then go into neutral.

Keep in mind that the Prius lacks a true neutral. The gears are always engaged, so even in neutral the engine and motors are connected to each other and the drive train. The N position simulates neutral by allowing the drive train to freely spin, but it only works with the Prius running. If you find yourself with a dead Prius, there is no way to shift into neutral. You will need dollies to move it.
