like docu's the story is all one sided to the point where i searched out opposing views of which there were many but few had any real substance to the argument. a few stated that he experienced a high rate of success because he "cherry picked his patients" making sure the ones he did pick had above average odds of a cure to begin with.

but a study by the FDA proves that to be hard to believe. they took one of the worst; brain cancer in children and ran 4 case studies with 3 using the standard chemo, 1 using the burzynski method.

the chemo trial had 119 patients. only one "cured" but due to the detrimental effects of the treatment the lone survivor died from complications of the treatment. no one survived more than 5 years including the "cured" patient.

the burzynski trial had 40 patients. 9 were cured (in fact one of them was featured on the docu. he was diagnosed at 2 years of age. he is now 16) all nine that were cured have gone on to live normal uncomplicated lives. 12 of the 40 lived past the 5 year mark.

i find that statistic to be beyond the explanation of "cherry picking" patient. burzynski was the one who suggested the study because this type of cancer is generally considered to be uncurable. he has demonstrated a 20% + cure rate for years now. this is really unprecedented.

so for this type of over the top results, why has the FDA stonewalled him so much. it took a farce of a trial in the public's eye to really get the FDA to do anything.

we did not have this kind of issues with emerging AIDS treatments. they were rushed to market with just the slightest hint of success.

once again; docu's are pretty much one-sided but still worth a watch.

Just for clarification. Thalidomide was never approved in the US (till extremely recently in very restricted conditions). The gal in charge of the FDA, Frances Kelsey, back then decided that enough testing had not occurred. She later received an award from JFK for her decision.

That part sounds especially horrid. I had severe pain urinating after my prostate operation, but only the first few times, then it subsided. But at its worst it was excruciating.

I hope your test results are good and you can quit the chemo and resume a normal life. Unlike Rene, I cannot predict the outcome. But I'm rooting for you.

There's a bunch of PriusChatters from all over at GDE. Maybe next year the organisers could work in more of a PC meet, if that's possible...they're generally too busy with the event to relax and enjoy it, and tend to be on their way home the next day.

F8L, just checked into this thread after quite a absence, I certainly hope the results are both what you are hoping for, and you can hopefully put this behind you!

sending our very best wishes to you, J! we think of you often and hope those bastard cells stay firmly put on the losing end of this fight. i'm glad you're advocating for yourself as well- i am quite aware of the runaround and waiting involved in the medical system and wish more folks stepped up on their own behalf like you do! i recently had my routine monitoring of my breast tumor and (thankfully) they found no change since the first images from 2006. i am hoping you DO find changes- that any unwelcome spots are gone gone gone.

rather than offer my less than glowing opinion of one burzynski, i refer interested parties to a science-based analysis:

Burzynski certainly does come accross as a modern day huckster. Apparently he claimed a few testimonials for his treatment against AIDs and was going to follow through and have "studies done". So it follows with every other study or accepted medical practice which Burzynski dismisses: it's "the man" trying to stiffle him. His quotes from this article are rather telling: especially when *paraphrase* he says that if he wins the Nobel prize then everyone will be sorry. His other stance about modern medicine being overpriced and offering empty promises is extremely ironic when he has such high deposits and monthly costs for his miracle tonics that aren't covered by insurance.

It varies by medical establishment. For scans I usually get a week or less turnaround (scan to Dr calling me) without hounding.

    Justin,

Just found this thread and realized what is going on. In the Gen 3 forum (where I usually hang out), I've read some references to your not feeling well, but figured with such a consistently upbeat guy, it was nothing serious. Dang.

Hang in there, buddy. We're all hoping for good results from last week's scan. All the best to you!

Thanks for the support, Lee. :)

Unfortunately the news is not good. A tumor that had been reduced and seemingly destroyed as of my scan in June has returned and is larger. It is now 11mm in size and the other tumor remains unchanged. At this point it looks like the only possible "cure" is to do a lobectomy on my left lung whereby they remove the whole upper lobe leaving me with just one lobe on that side. I'm actually excited about the prospect of surgery because it is the only possible way I could beat this. Chemo does not cure this kind of cancer. My work even said they would buy me a quad so I could continue to manage my preserves in the event my lung capacity is reduced such that I can no longer walk the properties.

So while the news is bad, I still have hope. I just need to stay alive long enough for a better medicine or surgical technique to be developed. With the way medicine is improving I figure within a decade they'll have a cure. I just need to hang in there. :)

Wow, sorry to hear that, but at least there's something you can do about it, no matter how unappealing it may be. In the meantime, just pretend you're the knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail... just keep fighting no matter how may pieces of you they chop away!

Dang, sorry to hear that the tumor hadn't resolved. But look, as a non-smoker at your age you'll have no major issues with pulmonary capacity with a single lobectomy...at least once you've recovered--the Quad will just be a bonus!! Keep us abreast of when your surgery and such will be.

    It's just a flesh wound!

I hope that is the case. I honestly don't care if my abilities are reduced if it means I'll survive the cancer. :) The quad would indeed be a bonus but that means I'll have to buy a truck to haul it around with. It'll cost me an extra few grand in fuel each year but whatever. :)

A Prius truck. When will the 4x4 version of the Prius be available?

    Hang in there!
