I was told by two local Toyota dealerships today that part # 28800-21170 has been replaced by 28800-21171 for most 04-09 Prius models.

The new 12v battery that ends in 71 is significantly more expensive. The price is now closer to $300. The older one that we are familiar with costs about $140. According to the parts departments, the one ending in 71 is the latest version and 70 will be discontinued?

Does anyone have any experience with this? I tried looking up the new part number, but did not get any results.

    Thanks.

I am going to try an order Part #28800-21170 from my usual Toyota parts sources, and if that fails, I will look into the Optima option.

Last week, I bought a 28800-21170 to replace the battery in my friend's 2007 Prius with Smartkey (the non-Smartkey uses a smaller battery according to the dealer). I called two local Toyota dealers and both had the battery in stock. I paid $166; the other dealer wanted $206.

Neither dealer mentioned the "new" 21171 version referenced in the first post.

Unless it's a new deep cycle battery I wouldn't bother with the dealer units. The Optima is better all around. Especially if you have SKS.

This is getting weirder. Every dealer agrees that the part ending in 71 is the latest version, however, they are in disagreement over its price.

Some dealers are saying it has a MSRP of nearly $300, while others are saying it is the same price as the old version.

I'll leave the Optima as a last-resort option since this will cause problems for the next person who changes the battery.

    Why?

I don't recall any significant downside. You can still keep the old negative cable and terminal from the OEM battery. They're still attached to mine and I'll be removing them before I finally get it recycled.

It's for my friend's car, and if he takes the car to the dealer for a battery five years from now, it'll confuse the hell out of the service department.

Also, I spoke with my local dealer's parts manager and he researched the issue and confirmed that there has indeed been a price reduction in the newest battery. The sticker is now about $160. He agreed to sell it to me for $140 so I'll be picking it up later this week.

Once I get the battery, I will post some pictures to try and identify the differences between this latest version and the old one.

Are you getting the (newer) 71 battery? I have the 70 battery that I bought last week down in the garage still in the box. We can compare photos!

Interesting that we're both getting batteries for someone else's Prius. I think my friend will be a little more comfortable with the Toyota battery. For my car, I'd go with the Optima.

Just bought a 21171 battery today. $138.70 plus tax. Although they did want to charge me $230 to install it. Uh, no thanks.

Was the $230 for installation alone or would that've been the total amount (parts and labor)?

Please take photos of the new battery and post (you need to post five times before you can attach files.)

If it is not convenient to take photos, please note the manufacturer and model number of the new battery and post.

$370 total. At $140 for the price of the battery, I assume the remaining $230 was supposed to be for labor. Took me 10 minutes to do it myself. That's $1380 dollars an hour. I picked the wrong proffesion.:)

As promised, here are the pictures of the new battery. The new battery, IIRC, does not have any printing on the sides but otherwise looks similar except for some label changes. The entire job took about 40 minutes and is easily doable by someone who has some mechanical experience. However, I would not recommend this battery replacement to a novice who has never done any work on their car.

Tools need to complete the job-- 80 tooth ratchet, 6" extension, 3" extension, 12mm socket, 10mm socket and a super small flat head:

Label on the side of the old battery, I think:

In case your dealer has not gotten the memo about the recent change in the MSRP of the new battery part number, here is my receipt for proof:

I'm wondering why a new Toyota part number was assigned. Your new battery has the same GS Yuasa labels and S46B24R model #, as the battery I bought under the old Toyota part number in December 2010.

So much for hoping that it was a rebadged Optima YTS2.7J

Except for the part number, same labels as the battery I bought 3 weeks ago.

I checked several of my favorite online parts counters (Conicelli, Champion, Metro) this morning, and they all list $284 MSRP for this part number. The online price was anywhere from $210 to $224. I'm very curious to see what happens with this over the next few months.

They obviously have not updated their price list.
