Just got my first Prius, a 2004 with only 34,300 on the odo. It was owned by grandparents as the stickers on the rear indicate, and it was a one owner car as the carfax states.

Anyway when we got it, the tech just replaced the air filter and cabin air filter, said everything else is great.

I just swapped out the 12volt battery with an optima because the stock battery was well, old and dying every few days.

Anyway I don't know what service has been completed on it, but I'm more concerned about the age of the vehicle and the fluids than I am with the milage on it.

I have been searching this forum and found that the engine coolant is 10year/100k, along with the transaxle.

I am a DIYer so I can do the maintainance myself, but I'd like to know more accurately what needs done how that the car is just over 6 years old.

Everything seems fine, no noises from brakes, wipers are smooth, etc...

I want to set my prius to remind me to do things with the built in reminder thing, so I'm trying to get all the information I can. Thanks! And yes I read the sticky at the top of this forum, but again, most of that is based on miles, and I'm concerned about the years.

    Congratulations on your new purchase.

At this point, I'd suggest that you replace the engine oil and oil filter (if not done at the time of sale), and also replace the transaxle ATF fluid. That's about it.

There is a sticker on the window saying the oil is due at 38k. I have no problem doing it now but don't want to waste the money. I'll search now on replacing the transaxle fluid procedure.

If you don't have both the Owner's Manual and the Scheduled Maintenance Guide, get them. They will save you time and money. A substitute for the maintenance guide is

Thanks Richard, I have the books, along with my service passport thing, but being that the car is so old with low miles, I wanted to see what was more of an age related task versus a mileage related one.

    Additional things to check:

    1. Look at the serpentine drive belt. If the visible surface is shiny, consider replacing it, a replacement should cost ~$20.

    2. What does the tire tread depth look like? Are the tires the original Goodyear Integrity, or have they been previously replaced?

    3. When the wipers need to be replaced, consider buying the refills from your Toyota dealer, esp for the rear wiper blade which size is not easy to find aftermarket.

    1. Will do

    2. Tires are almost new, replaced 18 months ago, still 50something thousand miles left on them, I think stock type, haven't looked closely

    3. I saw that earlier and made a note of the part numbers. Thanks Patrick
