We just picked up a new v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) 5 last week and have already put on over 200 miles.
We ended up stopping at a gas station for a friend so we decided to fill up. We were at 1/2 tank with 281 miles.

Hand calculated, we got 40.735MPG, this was about 75% city 25% highway.

    Does this seem right?
Im thinking the engine is still so new it needs time to break in and mpg will go up, but just wanted to see if we are in the right ballpark.

congrats on the new v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon, seriously bisco, you should know this with all the time you spend on here lol)! if this is the dealer tank, it's useless. no idea where they filled it to. report back after your next tank.

you've been a member for 5 years, is this your first prius?

It is the dealer tank, but they filled it up when we bought it, and that was my "first fill up" that i calculated from.

but you don't know if they filled it to the click. 1/2 gallon can make all the difference.

Yes, I average just under 40 MPG using my v3 as a cargo hauler over 79,000 miles.

You should expect MPG to improve over the first 5000 mi. Pump those tires up to 40psi.

There is a variability in the nozzle shut offs and the angle you inserted it into the filler neck that can cause a variation. Note my 41.9 average below but a single refill has shown from 63 to 35 with one coming right after the other showing the first was a premature shut off. Use a spreadsheet or an app/site like fuelly.com to record several tanks. See what happens and yes you could increase a bit. You can also decrease as you become less careful of how you drive.

There will also me seasonal variations, in MS spring and fall are better than summer, which is better than winter

So we just needed our first real fill up.
Average was 40.107, this run was 80 city/20 highway. Good thing is its consistent, bad thing its on the lower side.

Its a new car, give it a few thousand miles to loosen up, 5000 till you're at its best.

So i have a few more data points, still not getting better, but getting worse:
    9/27/15=40.735mpg
    10/7/15=40.107mpg
    10/18/15=39.109mpg

All hand calculated with 80% city/20% highway

That's pretty consistent. Give it a few thousand miles to break in. Pump the tires up to 40psi. Pulse and glide driving techniques are even more important in the wagon.

welcome to both of you. you pretty much want to accelerate just above the ev line on the hsi, to 5-10 over the speed limit. then let off the gas and press back on the throttle to bring it barely above the regen line. keep it there until you're 5-10 under the limit and repeat.

So wanted to give an update on my mileage. Its been getting worse!!

    11/24/15 35.826 mpg 2439 miles
    11/14/15 36.65 mpg 2084 miles
    10/29/15 38.389 mpg 1716 miles
    10/21/15 40.133 mpg 1371 miles

I was expecting more in the range on mid to low 40's not 30's.

I am in the North East and it has been colder, but didnt think it would affect the car this much!
