New Fob Programming Success!

Hello All,

I'm a newbie, both to the forum and to Prius. My husband and I just got our first Prius about 2 weeks ago (2011 with solar roof and SKS), and the advice on this forum has been invaluable. Thank you so much!

Like others who bought used and received only one key and fob, we were shocked by the stealership price quote of well over $400 for a spare set. So, using the advice on this site and some additional research, he was able to successfully program a virgin fob to work.

Here are the steps:
1. Bring working key into vehicle.
2. Leave new key outside of vehicle, but have it readily available.
3. Press power button twice to turn on vehicle.
4. Disable antivirus protection on laptop (if applicable).
5. Physically connect laptop (he used Windows XP) to car via MINI-VCI cable.
6. Start Techstream (he used version 9.30.002).
7. Connect to vehicle and answer options pull down menu.
8. Select Body Electrical Tab.
9. Select Smart Key cell.
10. Select Utility button.
11. Select Smart Code Registration. He used the new one, but apparently there is a ‘classic’ option as well.
12. Follow the prompts, but in short:
· Hold registered key to power button (Toyota logo facing button) until you hear a beep.
· Leave vehicle with registered key
· Return only with new key to be registered (leave existing key outside of vehicle).
· Hold the new key to the power button until it beeps.
· Put new key in passenger seat. Techstream will provide confirmation on successful registration.
13. Start using new key. He suggests treating yourself to a Kombucha with some of the money you saved

Note: Step 12 is time limited to 30 seconds. There is a pre start check list you have to read before clicking start. This threw him off. Until you click the real ‘start’ button you won’t be able to hold the key over the power button for the beep.

The programmer and cable set he used is: Fotga Newest V9.00.034 Mini VCI for Toyota IS Techstream Diagnostic Cable & Software ($23 on Amazon).

The FOB was ordered from ToyotaOnlineParts ($120), part number: 89904-47420. Btw, this is the part number that WILL get you the oddball HYQ14AAB FCC ID that Toyota used around July 2011 (that even Toyota customer service doesn't seem to know about).

Also, he was able to change the customizable settings with the same programmer (such as changing that annoying constant reverse beep to a single beep, door lock settings, etc.). Of course, the stealership wanted $55 to do this.
