    Hi everyone,

    New to the board and thought I'd say hello. I live in Victoria BC, Canada. I don't have a Prius myself, but I've nicked one from my parents for the week, and am facinated by the thing. I tossed it on the dyno at work yesterday, and after disabling the traction control (thanks to this board BTW) pulled a 110hp, and 240lb ft of torque out of it. We had a hard time getting a decent tach signal though, and that threw off our torque curve after about 25% of the run. Though at that point the torque appears to have peaked anyway. We were using the blanket method over the spark plugs, as we couldn't find a diagnostic port. Having another paying client roll in forced us to shut her down before we could get a good signal. I'm rambling here, anyways, is there a tach signal port to plug into similar to other non hybrid cars?

    Oh, and I'll try to post up the dyno sheet and run video PDQ as well. Easily the quietest car we've had on the rollers, it was hilarious!

    Hello there, and welcome! I don't have anything helpful to add other than I noticed your screenname. I got rid of a 1996 SC2 (black-gold) the day after I took delivery of my 2006 Black Prius. I stilll have a hard time believing that after 10 years that car got 180K squeezed out of it and was still in pretty good running form when I sold it (on Ebay, no less) for a pretty decent amount. I've never looked back since. :D I had some good times in/with that car, but in all honesty it was far too small for our soon-to-be expanding family.

    Very interesting!! 110hp at the wheel? We would love to see the dyno graph. However, 240lbs-ft is 55lbs-ft short of 295 lbs-ft. Please post it.

    Crazy busy at work today, the only graph I grabbed on the way out was the first one by mistake. It's 105.5hp, and shows the AFR. You could rack lines on the fuel curve of this thing! The only other engine we've seen with a flat fuel curve like this was a rented Dodge Caravan.

    For the torque figure, is that quoted for the flywheel, or at the drivewheel? Losing 55lb-ft through a drivetrain like this isn't unheard of.

    Thanks for posting. I am not familar with AFR. Is that measurement of fuel usage?

    BTW, 295 lbs-ft is MG2 from 0 to 1,500 RPM (about 0-20mph).

    AFR is Air/Fuel Ratio. It does have some bearing on fuel consumption. In this case it will definitely affect fuel consumption. Most cars tend to run in the 13s. Cars with high compression or forced induction tend to run more rich to help prevent detonation. The only other production car I've seen that runs as lean as the Prius was the old Civic VX. That thing was in the same range, and garnered wicked fuel economy. It was basically a civic stripped of most luxuries, fitted with lightweight wheels, and given a small displacement uber lean engine. We've got one at the shop right now with a K20 (Think Acura RSX Type S) being stuffed into it's light little carcass for a rally car. It will PWN.

    Prius has two electric motors/generators (MG1 and MG2). MG2 is the bigger brother that has 295 lbs-ft of torque. A good site to understand Toyota Hybrid fundamentals.

    Wow!! Hybrid Synergy Drive is amazing!! Prius ICE is so lean below 30 mph (have to wonder if it is using any fuel at all) thanks to MG2 and HV battery pack. Beyond 30mph, AFR never drop below 14.3. Again, thanks to HV components, Prius doesn't have to run rich for highway passing, etc.. Remember those anti-hybrid arguements of hybrid carrying dead weight on the highway? Well, here is one of the evidence why Prius get 51 MPG on highway.

    Prius peaks 105.5 hp at the wheels. That means drivetrain loss is only 4.1% !!! You probably know more about drivetrain loss than me. In your experience, what loss percentage are "normal" for manual and automatic transmission cars? I always believed that ECVT drivetrain loss is about the same as manual transmission. Now, I am wondering if ECVT loss is less than manual tranny now.

    P.S: You might want to change The topic title to include Dyno graph to attract more experts in the discussion. If you have more graphs, please do post them. The video is great and Prius is as noisy as my Celica doing emission test :) Do you have a traditional car dyno video to compare with?

    My previous car was also a 1996 Saturn SC2 coupe, black anniversary package with leather interior. It has less than 50,000 miles on it and was running fine. My sister bought it for her son.

    I'm hoping to replace my current Black/Tan Prius for a 2009 Prius (hopefully with plug in option. LiI batteries and in dark blue/gray. That is my dream car.)

    If your parents get a black Prius your Mom can join the Cool Chicks with Black Prii.
