New to Prius and this forum. Got a good(I think) deal on a Prius Pkg#1, it was the last car on the lot with 2.9% financing. The one thing on the car that I truely would like to have updated is the CD changer. It is the single disk unit. I would like the 6 disk that plays MP3's. Is it possible to just have the CD changer updated? I mainly listen to talk radio on AM, but occsionally would like to be able to listen to some of my MP3S. I dont need a better sounding system, it sounds OK to me, as I am too old to be listening to headbanger music thumping the hatch off the car, plus I have infants in there with me, and dont want to hurt their delicate ears.

Wow. My mind is boggled that you think it sounds okay :)

I would say the easiest thing to do is just get an ipod, fill her up, and plug it into the center console input. CD's are old school :)

Otherwise, check back in a few weeks, I am trying to upgrade my stock head unit in a week or so and can report back. It's non-trivial.

Sillyboy, you missed the obvious. I don't think he wants to replace it with a non-Toyota unit. I think he wants to put in the Prius factory unit that has the 6 disc changer.

    Ebay is your friend.

    Bingo!! We have a winner.

I saw one on Ebay for $174. CD MP3 6 CD for 05 06 models, and wonder if it will work in an 07 without modifications, IE Plug and play.

I wouldn't buy it - The radio was the same for 04/05 - and then 06/07

One from 04/05 WILL NOT work in an 06/07 and vice-versa. You have to replace the brain and the screen as well.

OK, I will continue to look. I stopped at the dealer and got the deer in the headlights look when I asked the simple question, can the 6 disk CD radio be swapped out with the single disk and work? If I find one for the 06-07 model, I will get it check it out and see if it works, if not, resell it. Either the programming is built into the MFD or the radio, or it isnt, My guess is the radio has the programming for the MFD and not the other way around. Just for the record it is type 3.

Thats the one the dealer showed me, but I cant see how that would install in the dash with the current setup. The radio in there now looks just like this one Here

Found one from an 05, and I do see a difference between the two radios, this one does not look anything like what is in mine. The previous one looks just like it, and I dont see how the one you linked to would work with the existing setup. The one thing I can tell from looking at it is at least it would fit :D

Located one that supposedly works in the 07, should have it on Monday, was hoping to have by this weekend, but paypal took their own sweet time sending the payment. grrrr. Hopefully it will be plug and play. Any tips on removing the unit from the dash?

If your only concern about upgrading to the JBL 6 disk changer and added speakers, have no fear, the sound is better but not louder than the base system and in fact many have complained that it does not have enough bass et al. In addtion, when you upgrade you get bluetooth capability with the JBl unit with hands free use of cell phone and that may prove in the future a very bit benifit. My state just passed legislation making it a ticketable offense to be talking on a hand held cell phone. $101 dollars if you get one.
