New VW Golf 62 mpg (US), 99 g/km CO2

    Concept? So this isn't going into production any time soon? If you read further, they are offering:

    At market launch, Volkswagen will offer two 2.0 liter TDI engines on the Golf, delivering 81 kW (108 hp) and 103 kW (138 hp). The 81 kW diesel has a fuel consumption rating of 4.5 L/100km (52 mpg US) and emissions of 119 g CO2/km—a reduction of 0.6 liter compared to the previous generation. The 103 kW diesel has a fuel consumption rating of 4.9 L/100km (48 mpg US) and 129 g CO2/km —also 0.6 liter less than the on the previous generation.

    Reminds me of the Jetta TDI that VW claimed would get around 70 MPG, then only got around 40 when it arrived in the US this year. I hope these Golfs will actually make something close to the numbers in the article

    Bluemotions from VW are almost undriveable. At least versions sold in Europe. They are made just to claim low consumption, yet they are expensive and full of compromises. From reduced soundproofing (take into consideration that VW diesels are still one of the loudest diesels around) to lower weight and tweaked gear ratios in manual transmission. At least in Europe Prius is way more driveable than VW Golf Bluemotion. Basically I was considering VW Golf, but ended up ordering Prius instead. ;)

    I'm confused. What is the point of their telling us they could get it down to 3.8L/100km if they wanted to, but are actually going to sell it at 4.5L/100km and 4.9L/km?

    I'm probably biased - but it would take a lot to make me buy something other than a Toyota. It would take a REAL LOT to get me to buy another VW. I owned several in my day - seems like every one I owned was in the shop quite a bit.

    VWs spend time at the shop but they sure are fun to drive.

    Keep in mind that diesel is just concentrated gasoline. In terms of oil consumption it about a little about half the mileage. So in gasoline terms it is only about 35 mpg.

    They drive just the same as the ordinary Polos/Passats etc if you can handle a manual gearbox.

    This is total rubbish. Diesel contains between 13% and 18% more energy per gallon (depending on season and locality) compared to gasoline. The fact that the CO2 emissions of the bluemotion Golf are less than 100 g/km confirms it is using less carbon and hence fossil fuel overall than any available gasoline car since the Honda Insight.

    and still putting out a lot NOx compared to a same small size car and engine based on petrol.

    the 3.8 is for the 1.6-liter TDI and the 4.5 and 4.9 is for the 2.0
