Tried to buy an 09 (package 3) but dealer would not budge or deal... will soon post my experience trying to make a deal.....We think we will wait for a 10 model if we have to pay top dollar.... Might as well get the newer one...... Thanks for all ya'll's help here on the chat .. Have learned MUCH from the forums... Kuffs

No. The traction battery is required both to start the gasoline engine, and to operate the electric continuously variable transmission.

The traction battery cannot be jumped without special Toyota equipment, but it is well protected against accidental discharge. For safety reasons, the high voltage traction battery cannot be connected when the regular 12V system is turned off, and the 12V battery can be accidentally discharged much like a regular car. But it can be jumped by regular users.

The battery is always between 40% and 80% (or so) SOC, so it will never be 'dead.' Unless it someday dies, which has be so rare as to not warrant consideration.
