This is an impulse buy due to the Year End Promotion Toyota is running till1/2/18.

I drove 298 miles to and from to the 2 nearest dealerships (Enid, OK and Wichita, KS) and neither salesman could answer any of my questions.

#1-> Other than No Spare Tire- What are the differences between the 2 Eco and the Standard 2 ?

Thanx for any help you can give.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

Drove all the way to Eddys in Wichita, eh? We lived there for 3 years and purposefully drove to Midwestern Toyota in Hutch;).

But to answer your question, the battery technology is different, the 2 eco employs LiON technology and the standard 2 employs NiMH technology.

Merry Christmas and good luck with your purchase (y).

There's a summary of the levels here:

Visual Tables of Gen4 Package Combinations | PriusChat

(See now, @bisco mentioned the above too)

In addition to what's been noted, I believe the Eco nixes the rear wiper and cargo cover?

For some reasons, not completely clear, the Eco's mpg ratings are officially higher. There's debate (unresolved?) as to why. The car is lighter, but maybe there's also some tweaks??

The Eco also has a higher recommended tire pressure even though the tires are the same as the Two
I believe the windshield is supposed to shield better from the sun’s heat.
The Eco also has automatic wipers.

I don't get that higher tire pressure, seems like smoke and mirrors. (n)

Many people have seen improved mpg with higher tire pressures. They are just using that in their marketing.

Wow big difference... I was told that all the 2017 Prius have LiON batteries, except someone at Eddy's who said the Eco have NiMH and all the other models had LiON...Then he changed it a minute later to tell me they all had LiON.

Based on my limited knowledge - I only want a Hybrid with LiON- my experience with small batteries is they are much superior if you handle them correctly . . .and I believe you get more power/weight with LiON.

I believe I had more Product Knowledge, after several hours on internet researching, than the salesforce.

I am buying this car only becauseI want the highest MPG- Hence the Eco.

The reason I went to Eddy's is that is the ONLY Eco with-in 500 miles. . .

    Thanx for your reply . . .

If you want high mpg, why not go for the Prime as that has LiON technology (n)?

There is not much difference stated in the EPA estimates between the NiMH and LiON technology, unless going plug in ;).

We have had our 2010 Prius II now for over 8.5 years and 170 k miles which runs on the NiMH platform (a proven toyota technology that was so successful it was patented and sold to Ford):).

That is a shame about Eddys: they have a monopoly and can’t capitalize on it:(. We were underwhelmed by their service and attention to detail.

    Good luck with your purchase(y).

we're still trying to figure out if and how the eco gets better mpg's than the 2.

I will look at the Prime- but I don't think I want anythingI have to PlugIn. Electricity is one of the few things that are more expensive in this small town I just moved to to retire.

And they look like alot more $$$- but thanx for the suggestion -I had not looked at the Prime and now I will.

Ref. Eddy's- I may buy ther but I don't get a good feeling about the place in general and I must trust the Techs that work on my cars- and the honesty of the management.

    -----------

Just looked at Prime- will not work for me...
#1-> Nearest charging station 60 miles away.
#2-> 25 mile range - I live in a small remote town in NorthCentral Oklahoma- a little more than half way btw. OKC and Wichita. That would be enough range in a city but I would be running on Hybrid all the time so no need spending the extra $$ for Prime.

Thanx again for suggesting it as I need to explore all options before I buy as I will own this the rest of my life...

With the Prime you don’t t have to plug it in, it’s an option. It has a bigger battery pack than the standard liftback, so more bang for your buck;).

And there are plenty of rebates that actually make the Prime cheaper than the liftback :).

This wouldn’t be Enid, OK by chance? Sheldon Cooper strike a chord ?

    Good luck at Eddys’s (y).

yes Enid, Ok- Northcutt Toyota. Talked to Shane- nice guy and I had a much better feeling about the Dealership- but they had none in stock. I had to test drive a 2016 3 used. I had not even driven one before.

"bang for your buck;). " =-> do you mean more power and speed??

The pack on the Prime is 4x the size of the liftback;).

So you can go longer on a charge(y).

I see- well I will look at the more- I have the Eco at Eddys @ $26,399 out the door. I really don't want to go much over that as I am using the 72mo/0% deal and want payments under $400.

This will be my 5th Vehicle - and I am the only driver- single and live alone except for my Black Standard Poodle, Garbo, and she has not learned to drive yet.
    ------------
2010 Infiniti G37x Coupe- DynoTuned @399HP- only thing left to do to it is a Supercharger.
2016 Polaris slingshot (retirement present to myself...lol)
1999 Honda Valkyrie- Customized and Speed Engine Work- DynoTuned @141HP
    2006 Sprinter Van
    ------------
So as you can see I have three Toys and a Truck. -->This Prius will be my Practical Common Sense Vehicle...lol.

I only get about 16-22 MPG in all the others and I have found I run to OKC, Tulsa and Wichita all the time- hence I am buying for MPG- Plus what guy does not want a New Car....

Someone posted a battery tear down video link here, and IIRC, the regular Prius (it was an Eco, with the Lith Ion). IIRC the guy doing the tear-down, said something along the lines of "this battery has 2 banks, the Prime has 5".

I'll see if I can find, post a link, and check that.

Addendum: here's link to that video thread:

Video: Prius LiOn Battery Dissected and Discussed | PriusChat

I couldn't find the comment about how many banks, Prius vs Prime, pretty sure it's in there somewhere though.

If it were me, I would consider a Prius 1 as an option;). With Toyota running end of year sales, you can probably get one of around $20-22k and be in a similar mpg position.

The difference in mpg between the eco and base Prius will take ALOT of miles to make up the difference in cost.

Have fun with your purchase decision (y).

It's funny, I just notice in that video I linked, he drops a bit of an easter egg, maybe: saying (again, paraphrasing): The Lith Ion battery gains you about 4 mpg, over the Nickel metal hydrid.

This is contrary to the official mpg ratings, which rate all at the same mpg except the Eco, regardless of some being Nickel metal hydrid and some being Lith Ion.

But maybe he has inside info??

(I'm probably mangling the battery type names, too lazy to check.)
