Amazing victory for a conservative - kind of like a French Rudy.

Here is a Frenchman who calls America a good friend, looks at Israel as an ally, admires an open economy - in general everything opposite of Mr. Chirac's beliefs and deeds over the past decade +.

I like what i see - and i am interested in seeing what he can do.

We need a strong France - we need a healthy France - we need France to be our ally.

Congrats to France for seeing the obvious and acting - and best of luck to Mr. Sarkozy - he will need it.

Well, I'm disappointed in the election. France could have had the "world's hottest leader." :)
But the good news for France is that Dr. Berman will now call off his boycott of French wines.

u r making me laugh - and i love the picture on your following post.

anyway, and u have to believe me on this... right before i went to priuschat.com to get this post i was on the website of a wine store in NJ i do a lot of business with looking at their French wines! you are absolutely correct, i feel alive now, free to explore the left and right bank if you know what i mean :D

a funny story. about 15 years ago - way before i started drinking wine - a patient gave me a bottle of red wine and i put in deep and far away in my basement never to be seen again -- until -- last summer when after reading the latest issue of Wine Spectator i noticed a label on a bottle of wine they were highly recommending - a Petrus Pomerol. A real interesting and uncommon label enough that i called my wife up and sent her immediately down to the basement to see if the label was the same (the bone color with the "v" instead of the "u"). Low and behold it was. It was the same bottle i almost gave away or threw away only to bury it deep and dark. it was a 1991 Petus Pomerol worth more than i would ever ever ever spend on a bottle of wine. i called my worlds best friend who is a wine nut and has a huge cellar and has been collecting for several decades. i asked him what i should do with the bottle...

without hesitation he said get two straws and two seats and i will see you soon :D

so, we were in the Berkshires last summer at a new French restaurant. When i gave the owner the bottle to see if he would open it for us he said under one condition - and he apologized in advance - he said he knows its wrong to ask - but he also wanted just a little sip of it too. My friend said he would have been very disappointed if he did not ask for some. We had a great time that night - the food was real good, the company even better and the wine was amazing - and the restaurants owner loved it too. He had been dying to get some for ages. It was a win win win situation - and he did not charge us a corkage fee and in fact gave us dessert on the house for giving him a glass of it.

wishes for a good and healthy week my friend.

    David

Wow- a Petrus- that was a gift! I have had the pleasure of tasting a Petrus once in my life; it was amazing.

I have a similar story. When we bought our previous house in 1994, the realtor came to our house after the closing with a big shopping bag. He knew that I was a wine collector because I showed him where I was going to build the cellar in the new house. He had sold this old estate, and there were some old bottles of wine left in the cellar, and he figured that I would appreciate them. So he proceeds to pull these bottles out of the bag, and they're all mediocre German wines that wouldn't have been great when they were younger, and they were far too old to drink. So I almost fell over when he pulled out the last bottle- a Château d'Yquem. It was from the '40s- I don't remember which year (there were at least three 100-point vintages in the 40s). A d'Yquem from a good year is drinkable after 100 years or more. So we went to visit friends in NJ who are also oenophiles and had a great dinner with incredible wines at their house. The climax of the evening was to be the opening of the d'Yquem. But, alas, it must not have been properly cellared, as it had turned bad. :(

What a sad story - I actually shed a tear - that must have been the ultimate tease.

    Be well my friend.

I assumed "Doctor" "Berman" was boycotting them because he's not of legal drinking age yet. (And too bad God probably doesn't exist, otherwise I'd be thanking Him that "Doctor" "Berman" isn't of voting age, either).

what was a nice discussion about wine turns suddenly nasty and personal - good work.

perhaps next time, keep the claws in, and comment on the topic of the post instead of leveling personal attacks.

maybe have a glass of wine or two before you respond to one of my posts. i hear the French make some nice wines, i will tell you because i have started buying them as of today :D

And you must get this God complex of yours controlled better. It makes no difference whether or not I or you believe or do not believe in God - it is best if you keep your beliefs to yourself and not try to push them on others or change the mind of other people. It is really uncivilized of you - and we know how the French want their American friends to be civilized - like how i connected those dots?

    dbermanmd,

    You were suckered in!

The liberal faction doesn't want to talk about wine.
What they really don't want to talk about is NICOLAS SARKOZY!!!!

Don't let the wine go to you head!
You don't actually have to drink the liquid for it to mess with your train of thought.
Next time, try to say on subject.

The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman."
The Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."

The First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French."
This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.

Just the "strong" country we need!

All joking aside, I can't seem to find too much on the man and his political leanings, just the positions he's held in the past. I did read a bit about statements he's made that have given the impression that he was breaking beyond the separation of the judicial and executive branches, which is a bit worrisome. However, I'm not French, and they can do what they want with their government :p

I think its a mistake to think he will be "pro-America" ... all French politicians are pro-French, as they should be. He is for putting the French back to work with a 40 hour work week (you can be arrested for working more than 35 hours), reducing welfare benefits with some kind of "workfare" program, limiting immigration and, probably, trying to get the French people to start having kids again (my guess on the last one, but the reason they have such liberal immigration is to provide workers).

He will not be supporting our pre-emptive, "if you're not with us, you're with the terrorists" foreign policy any more than President Chirac. Most of us don't support that, so we shouldn't be surprised.

It does show Europe as moving right, with Germany's recent chancellor and now the French President being conservative. Some of it may be nativist reaction to Muslim immigration and the threat to their own cultures from that.

We know he will be more of a friend to the US than the prior two French leaders. We also know he will be more balanced when it comes to middle east matters. With regards to "pre-emption" we won't know until the time comes for it [ie, pre-empting Irans nuclear ambitions] - my guess is he will give his blessings for that. We know he is pro-economy, pro-capitalist, anti welfare state.

I agree - Europe has moved fairly dramatically towards conservatism - and there are many reasons for this, the least being their own radicalized Muslim immigrants. We can now count three European countries as friendly - GB, Germany and France. This is huge - we need a strong and allied Europe in this current war we are ALL in.

Berman, could you please post some articles that support your assertions that he will be all of this stuff?

you can read editorials in almost any newspaper yesterday and today and see for yourself. he spent time with president bush and never once attacked him or made America his political fodder. his views on immigration and immigrants are well know, as are his views on France's 35 hour work week (strongly against it). He is for sure a very conservative person, who views America as a force for good in the world. he recognizes current issues France and Europe have with Islamic based terror - and geopolitical aspects of this conflict.

there is no doubt his opponent was the more liberal / socialistic / pro-welfare state / pro current foreign policy candidate. she even lost the female vote!

do not think that Hillary has not recognized this whole event as should the dems in general.

Don't be so quick to make sweeping generalizations. I'm the one who started the wine thread on FHOP. I'm happy to talk about wine all night long- although I'd much rather drink it. :)

What i've read have stated individuals opinions that he's pro-America, most of them just quoting one time where he said France would be Washington's friend - Nice words, but honestly, just about every major official for one of the developed countries has said stuff like that over the past 50 years. It's actions that count, and i haven't seen anything to indicate he's not just paying us lip service.

In fact, he could cause huge problems for France. He's very abrasive, and has repeatedly attacked the poor, labeling them as "scum" and vowing to mop up the areas with a high-powered industrial cleaning machine. Doesn't sound like someone who wants to unite the country, like he claims.

And even if he wants to be friends with America, he has to worry about his own reelection... And reports say that most of France is very bitter towards America.

Please, like i requested, post links to articles that back up your claims. With out links, claims are just opinions.

Sarkozy undoubtably benefitted from the backlash against immigration in France and in western Europe in general. Also, France is a somewhat chauvinistic society, and there were probably a lot of voters who could not bring themselves to vote for a woman. This was certainly a divisive election in France (like our recent elections); there were a lot of riots in France in the wake of it (the most popular hobby in France is apparently setting cars on fire).
France has its parliamentary elections next month; that will determine whether or not Sarozy has a mandate to push through his agenda.

    Two things:

    1. citing Pravda is a tough thing for most people of free thought to accept - especially in my age group. Perhaps it is an instrument of free thought and expression today - that would be a nice thought.

    2. Sarkozy causing large problems for france - they elected him, no? and aren't you the one that says do like the French - perhaps they will be doing more like Americans now?? :D

my thoughts are in line with a fellow oenophile - France is waking up to the threats it faces from both internal and external forces.
