ironically, i paid 3 times more for this 10 year old macbook than 3 previous window machines which would only last a few years.
i didn't mind the windows operating system so much, but going back would be a learning curve.
plus, it is tied to the iphone which does make things simpler.
other than this website, i don't have any complaints

To be positive, this website made me learn about ad blockers. :)

Maybe just iPhones problematic, can’t recall anyone chiming in. You have a Mac desktop; that requires manual refresh as well?

if Danny ever checks on this thread we’ll have everything he needs lol.

If you paid the mac price on a PC, the PC would likely last just as long.

I'm still using a Dell XPS17 from 2012. Only thing I've changed are the battery and the HDD, which I replaced for a SSD a few years ago. It still runs Windows 10 great. It's the first time I can't upgrade it to the latest OS version since it's missing TPM 2.0. An Apple laptop from that era would have been obsolete many years ago because of their third switch of microprocessors architecture.

I'm still using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). The only things I've changed are the battery and the HDD, which I replaced with an SSD a few years ago. It still runs macOS 10.14 great. I still have the option to upgrade to macOS 10.15 but choose not to at this time.

I've only recently come across a few websites that are not behaving, PriusChat being one of them. The other are sites that use Shopify to drive their eCommerce offering. In both cases, I use the Opera browser and happily continue using my obsolete Apple product.

Not everyone is a slave to the coolaid.

my only issue with my 2013 macbook pro 15" is that the cursor goes whacky sometimes, jumping all over the screen, changing sizes and clicking different things.
there's no rhyme or reason, but it seems to occur out of the blue, go for days like that and then stop for a time.
closing the cover for awhile helps temporarily. it might be worse in high humidity. i can't find any solution online.

My main issue, with pc's purchased in 2011: they used to be peppy, now they drag. It might be partially alleved (sic, if necessary?) by a clean install. Still, I think the main issue is performance advancements in the new machines: software makers take advantage, bloat-up their software, but for me on my 13 year old machine...

Most every time I boot or bring it back from sleep (ctrl-alt-delete is the most efficient wake up call I've found for that), I'll play a game of FreeCell (the "classic" version, which runs like greased-lightening). While the bloatware browser, email and whatever "spool up".

Maybe open up the touch pad and spray it, and any connecting wires, down with electronics cleaner.

Except you are no longer receiving security updates since November 2021 and 10.15 since November 2022. Maybe it's because I was working in IT Security and saw some pretty crafty ways to gain access to a computer, so running an OS that might have security holes that will never be patched? Nope, not me, I won't drink that expired Coolaid.

A computer of that time era most certainly has a spindle type HDD. Replace that by a SSD (for less than $100) and see its performance increase ten fold.

Back in 2018, instead of refreshing our fleet of computers, we replaced the HDD of about 500 computers at work (Dell Optiplex 980) bought in 2010 by SSDd. That gave them new life until they were changed last year for laptops. If it wasn't for remote working where a laptop is more practical, they would still be in operation to this day, still receiving critical security updates.

My dilemma is October 2025. This is the date Microsoft will stop doing updates for Windows 10 (unless you're a corporate willing to pay for continued support, like they do for Windows 2012 servers) and I, as a user of a Windows product since the early 1990 will face the same faith a Mac user has faced several times, forced obsolescence.

Yeah I've got a pair of old-school drives, back up crucial files from C: to D: periodically, with Robocopy in a batch file. I could replace C:, restore from D:, then "maybe" replace D:, though performance with the latter is not really an issue, and it only get's written to every so often. Hmm.

    Or get an HDD Duplicator

    https://a.co/d/5NwA979

and do a copy of your old HDD to your new SSD then simply replace your HDD for your SSD and boot up. You just have to make sure your SSD is at least the same size as your HDD but preferably bigger. Look for "ssd 1tb sata" on Amazon and you'll find one that fit your budget.
