"WASHINGTON – An Irvine energy company could soon turn trash into gas for cars thanks to a $40 million grant from the federal government, announced today by the Secretary of Energy."

"BlueFire Ethanol Inc. will receive the money from the Department Energy to help build the company's first ethanol plant at a landfill in Corona".

"BlueFire's plant, which is slated to open in 2009, will not only produce the ethanol additive for cars, Klann said, but will also operate in a way that helps the environment. Methane gas from the landfill, owned by Waste Management Inc., will power the plant itself."

now if they could just produce butanol instead of ethanol it would be even better. I wonder what the cost is for this approach. I've also heard a bit about gasification of solid municipal waste to create synfuel. I wonder how the two compare in terms of cost and energy balance.
