OBD-II and SAE J2534 Tools List for PC, Smartphone, Tablet; Toyota centric, July 2018

I purchased a 2009 Prius with 74K miles around the end of January 2018.
I've been reading through many of the PriusChat articles and thought that it would be good to collect some of the information I was looking for in one place for each subject.

This is a list of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) and SAE J2534 tools for a PC, smartphone, or tablet that are used to read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

Here's a little information for when you buy a device to read DTCs.

There are two types of diagnostic devices to consider, an SAE J2534 interface and an OBD-II reader.
To use Toyota Techstream software, you need a device called an SAE J2534 interface or pass-through. Techstream gives you complete scanning and programming functionality, so it can read all codes and subcodes. Techstream software is Windows only, thus the need for a Windows notebook PC.
For general code reading, you need a device called an OBD-II reader. OBD-II readers will read standard OBD-II codes but are more limited in the manufacturer specific codes they can read, and do not do programming.
They both use the OBD-II connector in your car, but have completely different command sets.

Several target Toyota and hybrid vehicles including the 2nd Gen.
Except for the Toyota Techstream system and MongoosePro Toyota 2 MFC2 SAE J2534 Interface, no endorsements are implied and the ordering does not necessarily imply any preference.
Toyota Techstream is the reference standard to compare to.
If you have the budget and/or need complete scanning and programming functionality, buy the Toyota Techstream system.

Remember, use this as a list, not an evaluation. You'll need to do your own up to date evaluation when you buy an OBD-II or SAE J2534 device. Not an all-inclusive list, mainly includes lower cost devices for PCs, smartphones, and tablets. Does not include handheld devices such as from Autel and Innova.

There are three levels of subscription for the Toyota Technical Information System (TIS) software: Standard, Professional Diagnostic, and Security Professional.
(A Security Professional level subscription is required for car to remote and immobilizer reprogramming or resetting. You must be a locksmith or automotive technician qualified in vehicle security system repair and a current member of the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) Registry to purchase a Security Professional level subscription).

Prices may vary, shipping and taxes extra.

If you have trouble with this model:
Measure the resistance between pins 6 and 14 (Wide edge of "D" at top, 3rd pins from left, top and bottom rows). If it is not 120 ohms, return for a replacement until you get one with the correct resistor in it. Some were made with 20 ohms and overload the CAN bus signal.
The problem can also be fixed by removing the 20 ohm resistor.
(Both end nodes on the CAN bus have a 120 ohm resistor across the +/- CAN signals right next to the CAN transceiver pins to terminate the bus).

    21. ELM327 Identifier App, Android 4.0-up $0 (Daaren Fonloil)
Use this app to identify the real ELM327 version you have, because a lot of China clone adapters often declare a wrong ELM327 compatibility.
ELM327 Identifier sends almost all AT commands available and shows what are supported in accordance with the ELM327 official datasheet (up to firmware v2.2), so you can quickly check if the adapter declaration is correct or if it's a fake adapter.
Some AT command requires a car connection with specific protocol to work; to obtain comparable results, these commands aren't checked by the app. The number of AT commands checked are 103.
IMPORTANT: a fake adapter doesn't mean that it will not work with your applications.

For those who don't have the time to read through post # 2, here is a summary with recommendations as of this time.

Here's a little information for when you buy a device to read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

There are two types of diagnostic devices to consider, an SAE J2534 interface and an OBD-II reader (OBD is On-Board Diagnostics).

See post # 2 for details and links.

SAE J2534 interface devices are in section I.
Toyota provides the MongoosePro Toyota 2 MFC2 from Drew Technologies, number 2, in their Techstream LITE Kit, number 1, but they are expensive ($500 alone or $1345 for the kit of device + 1 Yr. subscription of software).

For a low cost SAE J2534 device, look at a Mini VCI, number 5 ($35) or 6 ($50).
For a little higher cost, look at the VXDIAG VCX NANO series, numbers 3 and 4 ($80 - $240).
(These come with the appropriate software).

For OBD-II readers, Bluetooth readers will generally work with Android, although there are a few Bluetooth devices listed as working with iOS. Wi-Fi readers are often easier to get working with an iOS device. Software for iOS is more limited.

    Avoid the cheap ELM327 clones.
Devices listed as non-ELM, will not run the common ELM apps such as Torque Pro and Hybrid Assistant.

OBD-II readers are in section II.
OBDLink LX and MX Bluetooth devices are highly recommended, number 1 ($50 and $80). They work with the Torque Pro and Hybrid Assistant Android apps ($5 and $0).
ELM-327.EU ELM327 Bluetooth uses the genuine ELM327 v2.2 IC and is also highly recommended, number 2 ($57).

    For iOS, look at -
    OBDLink MX Wi-Fi, number 1 ($130)
    ELM-327.EU ELMINO WiFi, number 2 ($64)
    PLX Kiwi 3, Bluetooth 4.1, number 5 ($100)
    K Solution LELink^2, Bluetooth 4.0, number 6 ($35)

    Software is in section III.
Toyota Technical Information System (TIS) subscriptions have Professional Diagnostic and Security Professional levels, number 1 ($55 2 Day, $1095 1 Year).
Both levels allow use of Techstream scantool software, all available ECU calibration files, and Identifix Direct-Hit, plus access to the technical information library.
Security Professional adds access to vehicle security information, including key codes and immobilizer/smart reset capability. (Before you can purchase this subscription level, you must be a current member of the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional Registry).

Torque Pro, number 3 ($5) and Hybrid Assistant, number 4 ($0), both for Android, are very popular.
Torque Pro has a custom Parameter ID (PID) editor.

    For iOS, look at -
OBD Fusion, number 5 ($10), can create custom enhanced PIDs, Toyota Enhanced Diagnostics Add-on ($10)
OBD Auto Doctor Pro for iPhone, number 6 ($23)
OBD Car Doctor Pro, number 7 ($4)
Car Scanner Pro, number 8 ($6), has custom (extended) sensors (PIDs) support for manufacturer specific data - unlimited active custom PIDs

Drew Technologies also offers a CarDAQ-Plus 2 and CarDAQ-M which provide multi vehicle manufacturer capabilities. (Regretting I didn’t splurge on the CarDAQ-M a while back instead of the Mongoose Pro). I do believe the current Pro is version 2...

They look nice, but they are far above the price range I was targeting. There are a lot of options and companies if you can go to that level.
The MongoosePro Toyota 2 MFC2 in my list is the current version 2.

Thanks for compiling this comprehensive list, very useful.

I want to be able to program ECUs on various manufacturer cars (chiefly Toyota, Honda, & Subaru Outback), initially just to program new TPMS sensors but later to "do it all."

Among the SAE J2534 devices listed above, which are capable of use with more than one software package (e.g., Techstream, Honda Pass Thru, STIS Pass Thru Programming Tool)?

As far as I can tell, it's only the Tactrix Openport 2.0 and Allscanner's VCX Plus (new device that isn't yet listed here)?

Has anyone used the Openport 2.0 on several manufacturer's cars (not just Toyota)? @ChapmanF ?

Has anyone tried out the new VCX Plus?

P.S. I'm not interested in the MiniVCI option, even if it could be finagled to work on multiple manufacturer platforms, and don't have the budget for high-end solutions like those from Drew Technologies.

I just wanted to thank you for the time it took to put this together, I was so lost. Being on Apple made it more difficult than I imagined but through this, I found the right pieces for the right prices. Thanks!

Thank you Petrodollar! Our Gen 2 Prius HV battery is finally giving us problems (after 14 years and 200K miles), and your detailed report helped me quickly sort through the OBD II options. I ordered a OBDLink MX from Amazon today, and I want to say: "Thank You" for helping me to make that decision. I should have made this purchase years ago!

Regarding the Mini VCI interface, any insight into which version of TechStream is better (more reliable with best functionality) for the 2013 or gen3 Prius?

Any insight into which firmware version is more reliable with best functionality?

Also, looks like there is a PriiDash application that seems interesting. Wondering how performs with the Gen3's?

Seeing as your question so Gen 3 centric, maybe start (or add to) a thread in one of the Gen 3 forums.

Which of the listed apps above have the most bang for the buck? It sounds like car scanner Pro is the best and cheapest?
Appreciate your help I'm new to all this.

I use CarScanner, but the interface has a few little quirks. Very workable, though.
"Torque" has upped it's game in the last few years, if you want to take a look. Cuter interface and a little more expensive with add-in modules. I run Android but I see Torque has an IOS offering.

    Cheers,

Is there a way to test mini-VCI cables? Like how @Petrodollar says measure certain resistances for the Konnwei. Anything like that for mini-VCI cables?

These cables (maybe better called dongles) are not simple bundles of wire; they are a USB interface (typically) on one side, interfaces to several known car OBD protocols on the other side, and a busy microcontroller and supporting circuitry inside translating between the two. There is not very much you're likely to learn about one with an ohmmeter, other than maybe whether it is actually broken, in such a way that it probably won't work at all, and you wouldn't need an ohmmeter to notice that.

They also come with software (a J2534 driver DLL) to load on the laptop or other host device. That's what makes a dongle a J2534 dongle: the standard doesn't care about the hardware details, as long as it comes with a DLL that knows how to make it do the standardized J2534 things.

You are probably looking more for ways to learn which J2534 things your dongle is and isn't capable of doing. There are a couple options for that. There is a free download from Drew Technologies, "J2534-1 Bus Analysis Tool" (more here), which can put any J2534 dongle through its paces, report its capabilities, versions, and so on. There is also a (simpler) Cable Check Utility built into Techstream, described here. It'll give you a result looking something like this:

The post on the Konnwei is referring to a manufacturing defect that would completely prevent any communication. If your cable has intermittent comm faults then it is most likely because it cost something like under $5 to produce. Buy another unit from a different supplier and cross your fingers that it works better, or look at something with higher quality.
