Odometer limited to 299,999 miles

    Joined the 299,999 club yesterday in my '05 Prius. Best car I have ever owned, but the stuck odometer is a bit annoying.

    Yes I hit the magic 299,999 club a few years back and continued to drive it for anther approximately 30,000 miles when I got a recall notice stating that Toyota had a problem with the instrument cluster and they replaced it for free. The first time they did the replacement said 11 miles and Toyota said they we're suppose to be at 300,000 miles so they replaced it again and Toyota messed up again and so I got an odometer with 11 miles on it and sold my 05 about 2 months ago and now driving a 2010 Prius and loving . I was driving 1500 miles a week for 8 years

    Was it an actual recall on the dash? Because Mine stopped at 299K back in July...and yesterday they tried to tell me at the dealerships that computers just wear out like all other parts. And lady compared it to a transmission. WHAT?! they would glitch if that...this is clearly something else and multiple people have it

    No glitch -- so far as we know all the 2005 Prius odometers stop at 299,999 miles. No recall, no recourse -- just live with it. If you have to have a spinning odometer for log requirements there are a number of sub-satisfactory options. I think the cheapest is to legally register an odometer change and then have the dealership change the meter. Perhaps others can chime in with less expensive routes to change the odometer.

    There are 2 things you can do here.

    1. Call Toyota corporate and tell them your odometer stopped at 299k, they should offer you 50% assistance on a new one at the dealer. This is covered by an article on the internet and local news. You just have to call Toyota corporate for this problem.

    2. You can try and tell the dealership there is something wrong with your combination meter. There's an extended warranty out on this combination meter for 9 years unlimited mileage. You just have to tell them it goes out sometimes and they are suppose to take your word for it.

    If you've been taught not to lie, I would suggest you stick with option #1.

    is it 9 years from when you bought it? cause an 05... 9years is this year and only a few months left and I bought it in March 05!

    Congrats, that's a real milestone! I'm not far behind you with 278,000 with my 2007 Prius! I would hope that Toyota would some way to recognize owners that have "gone the extra mile" with these cars.

    I am coming up on 270K and am optimistic about soon experiencing the Stalled Odometer problem. I believe that I can probably buy a cheap EPROM programmer and reset the memory to zero, using a new EPROM, if necessary. I am also interested in simply putting a used display in. Does anyone know if the newer 2008 (or so) display can be used? It looks a little better then the original, as I recall.

    I had the MFD unit replaced under the extended warrantee about a year ago. It was occasionally going blank and made the car difficult to turn off at those times. Question: Do the replacement displays also have the mileage limitation or will my "new" unit (actually someone else's repaired unit, in all likelihood) now go beyond the 300K limit? I do not wish to expend a lot of energy to solve a problem that I may no longer have.

    I got a new meter last spring on my 05. I thought they would have fixed the issue, but mine, too, stopped at 299,999k. I now keep track of it using the trip B option.

    I calculate mileage by subtracting current fill up odo reading from previous fill up odo reading. Mainly because it's bullet-proof, can't be accidently reset like a trip meter. I use trip meter too, but just as back up.

    That aside, I'm sure there's one or two people basing their maintenance on odo readings, lol.

    Could Toyota re-zero the odo, and put some sticker behind the bezel, saying to add 300,000 miles??

    Well there is a place in the Owner's Supplement Manual to put in the mileage when the odometer was zeroed. It's near the beginning. (Might be one of the first few pages).

    I've purchased several used IBM laptops with password locked BIOS. Unlocking those devices consisted of simply reading the password out of the EPROM, and then using it. There are several programs available for reading those EPROMs, maybe even writing them. The laptop EPROMs are serial access devices with a capacity of like 128 bytes. They can be read incircuit, using signals directed from the serial port of a PC.

    Several years ago I was talking with an engineer who worked on bad Prius displays. I remember his comment that the format of the mileage information was "fairly obvious" after looking at the memory pattern with different mileage values.

    I suggest that you want to read that EPROM before it locks up at 299999. There may be other data in the EPROM, so you don't want to just zero out the whole thing.

    As I recall, the EPROM is mounted under the display panel. Once you've identified the chip location and type, you should be able to connect to the circuit board without removing the display. But that first one is going to be a real problem. Maybe a small mirror would work.

    I don't know if the newer displays are compatible with the early one or not. If it were my vehicle, I'd just try a newer one before going to all the hassle of reverse engineering the old one. Or maybe you can locate an old one with a low enough mileage reading.
