OEM Back Up Camera Successfully Installed

    BINGO.
    I installed a camera TOYOTA (ECLIPSE OEM) 08634-00120 bought from japanparts.com for 27,790JPY.

    This is a very nice (small) device with all the necessary hardware.

    I tried to use the ntsc/rgb converter 08635-28020 but I had no success.
    I did not receive the connector 90980-11922 due date is december 99!!!!
    So I used my home made connector (it works perfectly)....
    I had already a converter from converters.tv the ref is 173.this converter has an automatic switch to cam in reverse.
    they are in australia ,so the shipping cost is something. but the product works fine
    Next I shall shorten the cabling and attach it but it works fine.
    the image is very good and in color.

    I will try to put on line the details.
    It was quite a struggle to route the cable from the cam to the nav_unit , but it is perfect

    I converted the YEN to USD and got about $270. Not bad at all, but I'm not sure how much the other components cost.

    I attach a small pdf with some pictures.
    the cost of converter was 175us$ , shipping around 40us$ taxes in France around 35us$. so alltogether around 250 us$ .
    delivery time 4 days (yes four days only to come from kangarooland).
    this converter ref 173 is not yet on the web site of converters.tv
    it is a new product , it works fine...
    I spent around 5 hours for installing the camera and routing the cable from cam to nav_unit.
    another 2 hours to prepare and test the converter from toyota (no success)
    another 1 hour to prepare and test the cabling of other converter.

    I looked at the PDF. That camera is so small I didn't even see it in your original picture! I was wondering why you posted a picture of your license plate. :) I can see it, now I know what I am looking for.

    That would make parallel parking, in any vehicle, so much easier! All we need now it a kit or at least a parts list of everything needed as the whole process has been a try this, then that, then the other thing. Maybe an item for the knowledge base. Part numbers, source and instructions.

    attached picture of converter 173.
    you can have an idea of the size compared to a miniDV cassette.
    could you please give me the detailed connexions you used for your converter ; mine does not generate 9v for the cam...
    once working, I will check the bypass/switch of this converter, when you check the white connector on the left , you will find TX+, TX-, ground, ground, and 4 pins with 75ohms impedance so definitely it should be standard video input for RGBS.
    regarding mods on the173 converter, I just put the internal jumper for sync on 1-2 (sync type positive). for the cam I will use a voltage regulator 7809 because I am not sure if the cam can accept 14volts. my tests were done with a 9v battery , I am on the conservative side regarding electronics.
    next week-end I will try to feed a PAL video from a camcorder to see if the MFD can synchronize to 625 lines 50hz interlaced.
    I will also check if there is a possibilty to mirror the image inside the cam.

    This is great! A real breakthrough!

    Some queries I still have:
    Do you have any photo's showing where and how to reach the prius video interface (plug)? What is the connector pinning?

    Does the prius display require RGB only or can it deal with composite video?

    Thanks for the photos - I've definitely got to upgrade to color. Great job on the homemade connector. As far as more detailed instructions for my setup, have you seen page 3 of the zip file referred to at http://www.priuschat.com/forums/-vp45751.html#45751 ? Let me know if there's a certain area where you want more detail or photos.

    The connector we've been using is under the seat on the back of the nav ECU. You unplug the small white connector. The cable that's now loose goes up to the MFD. Pinout is as shown in the zip file just mentioned. IThe MFD can only deal with RGB+Sync in a format similar to what normally comes from the nav ECU. But if you get a converter from composite video to RGBSync and build a custom connector harness like in Frenchie's photos, other sources can drive the display. Sounds like this #173 beastie does away with switch boxes and automatically switches to backup camera in reverse (and passes nav ECU images through otherwise).

    I did like your indications ,only doubt is regarding pin marked 1G on the grey connector; I connected nothing on it. maybe I should put it to ground to..

    to everybody:
    Another very good point : the camera is working the right way, that means like the rear mirror : left is on the left & so on.

    I will try to take good pictures of cam in action.

    I confirm that activation of the cam & the switch to cam is really automatic when
    1)you are in mode MAP or DEST
    2) you engage reverse.

    An alternative to the backup camera is the talking ultrasonic backup sensor. I bought one after twice backing into objects that I didn't see. Only two times I've done that in 50 years of driving. Something about this car ...

    Anyhow, I bought it, installed it (easy install), and now have a female voice that tells me how many feet an object is behind me when my reverse light is on (also, at closer ranges, an alarm sounds that gets progressively more alarming with closeness). It works VERY well. I'll never back into an object again. I bought two, one for my not-so-careful sister, and one for me ($145 for one .. $258 for two).
