Rampant "inaccuracies" about the fuel economy of several of their current vehicles. 6 mpg overrating on the Kia Soul highway? This is really terrible behavior from them. Either they knew better and lied, or they were incompetent. The truth is I recently considered a couple of Hyundai's recently, in great part because of the claimed mileage. I didn't realize a brand could basically make up the EPA number and it was only later that it would potentially get audited.

Yes, GM gets away with it all the time, Kia may have forgotten that it was a foreign car maker.

Did you notice that far from being the median gas mileage, not one owner achieved the Hwy number?

Now look at the Prius v numbers again.

In fact, look at the Kia Sportage. (this is a thread about Kia)

some owners are getting the EPA hwy numbers, unlike the Equinox. Not many, but not NONE.

Same with the Hyundia Sante Fe, the range of owner MPGs includes the HWY number. It is not unobtainable, like the Equinox.

This one seems to be, 48 mpg in September (wow).

It looks like the same owner also has a Prius so maybe they have learned how to drive to achieve better fuel economy.

Odd when I look at it it says he averaged 30.2 (still very impressive in an Equinox, but not the EPA number)

EPA numbers are estimates, but if no owner of your vehicle can get your estimate, something is fishy.

What is the EPA combined number for the Equinox?

    look at his fuel ups.

I know people say the equinox is hard to hit its numbers, but has it actually been audited by EPA and they're like "Hold on guys, you're just making numbers up here."? Because that's what Kia/hyundai have done. If a car is legitimately following test protocol then any number it comes out, regardless of how it actually is in the real-world, is what they will go with (and that makes sense).

I do not know that the EPA has ever audited any GM estimates. That was my point, actually. Kia got caught because no Congressman is going to complain if the EPA catches them cheating. GM is a different can of worms for the EPA.

So what exactly does GM get away with all the time?

Every car maker supplies the EPA with the results of their own tests. Only under rare occasions does the EPA attempt to confirm those tests. A car company that no Congress member has in their home district is one of the those rare occasions. I do not expect to see that GM was audited, let alone that GM was audited and reprimanded. I wish I believed that was because GM was honest.

Sadly, we know how honest they are.

You don't think there might be something fishy with a two fuel-ups suddenly being twice the miles? With more city miles than the previous two (one of which is suspiciously low)? 58.8 MPG doesn't sound a bit out of whack? My suspicion is that a couple of fuel-ups were missed.

Yea, they seem to be a bit conservative :)

It's too bad that Fuelly doesn't work for over 200mpg.

That graphic proves that GM is dishonest, at least at times. It really is a shameful thing they tried to pull there.

However, I believe that GM and most brands are pretty accurate with their EPA. This article said that it's pretty rare for an audit to find issues, so for a vehicle like the equinox that many have complained about, I bet that its EPA is actually pretty good and if anything the EPA test needs to be updated.

I don't know anything about the Equinox. Jimbo pulled this data as an example to support his earlier statement.

I wouldn't have used Fuelly as a data point, for a number of reasons, but Jimbo was providing the example.

Please don't ask that. We all know how dishonest it is. Here is hint, though: my car gets infinity MPG.

My Volt's lifetime MPG is 241, so I guess I don't understand where the dishonesty is.

It seems obvious, atleast to me, they were talking about a Plug-In.
