I've read elsewhere on this site that comnpressable gaskets should be changed everytime the oil is changed (i.e., insterted between the plug and the bottom of the oil pan). I just did my first oil change and found no such gasket on the plug shank. Are these gaskets required on the '04 Prius or just on earlier models?

it was stuck on the oilpan or came off when the oil was draining out. You should definitly check and confirm that there is a gasket between the plug and the pan. If there isn't you'll have a leak and the plug can possible work it's way out. NOT a good thing.
