Perhaps the sub sent a SUBliminal message and the oil tanker didn't notice :)

I remember that one, and even in the big ocean, you could see how a sub might surface into a fishing boat, especially if it's stopped or just trawling or something. But even a small tanker would probably be bigger than the sub, and you'd imagine the hydrophones or sonar or whatever would have picked it up. Anyway, just one of those news items I thought folks would find interesting.

If the sub was running silent, the tanker would have to be to be making noise for the sub to hear it, and it was at night.

If you had the string of bad luck with your car like the Greeneville did, what would your insurance premium be?

Especially when you don't follow procedures and allow civilians a turn at the controls.

Hmmm, ok, we can deep six the conspiracy theories... Perhaps it was something much more simple, like the pilot was eating a squid sandwich on a torpedo roll, and was distracted momentarily, mid-bite, when he glanced over and saw an anti-Bush commentary on the back page of the Newport News, amidst an array of cheesy car ads for Jack Dodge, lying on the floor.

There could be a number of errors that would cause this. One is miscalculation by the guy with the headphones on ... they estimate the distance based on the sounds they hear. And sound travels funny under water ... a temperature difference between where the sound is coming from and where you are can change it quite a bit. The sonar guy could have thought the screw sounds he was hearing were from a bigger boat farther away, or a smaller boat behind him.
