    Hi

My 2013 Prius has just under 20,000 miles on it. Has had regular oil changes and routine maintenance performed. Couple of days ago it started making a knocking noise along with some strong vibrations, and the check engine light came on. I suspected that the cylinders were misfiring and sure enough, the OBD reader shows error codes P0300, P0301, and P0302. I read through the forums extensively and some of the most common root causes for this problem seem to be defective spark plugs or ignition coils, or clogged EGR intake port. Given that the car has such low mileage these seem plausible but, somewhat improbable. However, I am open to suggestions.

I did have a brief look and saw that rodents seem to have chewed through two wires (see attached pictures). One is black and one is yellow. Could this be related or is this a red-herring?

Any help or suggestions for further probing are deeply appreciated.

    thanks

A couple of other points that I forgot to mention. I put the car in P and revved the engine. The misfiring seems to happen mostly at low RPMs and tends to disappear at higher RPMs. Also I checked the engine oil levels and it seems to be close to the upper mark. The coolant level seems to be within spec.

I would work on the chewed wires first

Thanks for your suggestions. Indeed it was the chewed wires that were the problem. I removed the fuel injector connector, spliced in a new one and so far it seems to be doing OK.

@bisco: yes we drive very little in general and in particular this car much less (our other car is an EV and we tend to drive it a bit more).

Those wires go to the fuel injector. It's NOT supplying fuel to that cylinder.
You can take the plug off. Remove the connecters, and solder some short pieces of wire
to splice the wired together. (black to black, yellow to yellow)
That will probably solve your misfire problem.
You should check ALL your wiring to make sure nothing else is chewed through.

Yes. And I've found it helpful to make friends with the neighborhood cat.
