I'm just about to get my 2006 Prius 08, and I was reading the (downloaded) owner's manual last night (I simply can't wait for the paper version!).

Anyway, there is a warning about getting too near the remote key system antennas in the doors and in the cabin with a pacemaker/defibrillator.

Does this mean my Dad, who has a pacemaker, cannot ride in the car? how near a proximity are they talking about?

I find it hard to believe that someone with a pacemaker cannot ride in the car.

    I think it's fine...RF transmissions shouldn't cause any problems.

It's going to be impossible for anyone to completely rule out interference with a pacemaker, but I wouldn't worry if I had a pacemaker. Cell phones put out much more RF energy than the transponders in the Prius, so if he is okay being around cell phones he should be fine.

If you're really worried, you could always disable the SKS with the defeat switch.

As not only a computer engineer, but one who works for one of the big 3 (won't say which one, since this may be considered "advice"), i would say two things: Modern pacemakers are designed with all sorts of testing, including, but not limited to testing for RF interfeerance on a large number of commonly used frequencies. That being said, i do not have, on hand, the exact frequencies the FDA requires testing for. Secondly, the brand, model, and age of the pacemaker may play a role.

I would highly recommend, since you are concerned about this, calling (or having your dad call) the company and ask them if there is any reason for concern. for easy access, here are the proper numbers and websites for the top 3 (in alphabetical order):
