Package 8 is about $2,000 dollars less than package 9. Is it worth the extra 2k for extra airbags, auto-dimming rearview mirror w/homelink, HD headlamps, fog lamps and stability control? Toyota makes most of there profit on this car from the high end extras. I found it interesting that all the demos at the dealerships I visited all had package 8. I ordered package 9 because I didn't want to always be second guessing myself.
At this point I am thinking of taking any color Prius and having it painted VW lime green. I do want the Ivory/Brown interior.
If anyone hears of a car a dealer can't get rid off ( right ), let me know.
Thank you for your responses to my questions.

I had the same doubts and asked for package 8. I do want the auto-dim mirror with homelink, but it is only about $250 from the parts department! My concern is that I see only one or two others in Order Tracking who indicate package 8 and almost no mention of it elsewhere. So I might end up with package 9 anyway.

Package 8's are practically non-existent at this point. I think the latest allocation I saw posted here on this message board didn't have any Package 8's at all.

the airbags alone are worth the difference. if you get a chance, look at the difference in crashworthiness (surviveability) results for vehicles with and without side air bags.

the extra 2000 dollars doesn't change much on your monthly payment. might as well go all the way!

To me the airbags were the most important option I could have! Go for them, and whatever you have to take to get them. You want to survive to enjoy your Prius!

Air bags and VSC were extremely high priorities for me. Homelink, NAV, and 6-CD changer were not. So I got a #7. If you don't need NAV, I suggest a #7.

My priorities were SE/SS and the cassette and CD changer. That combination is only on packages 8 and 9.

As I recall someone mentioned that the premium audio is a different Panasonic head with JBL amp and speakers. Has anyone found the model number of the Panasonic head and if it is available after market? That would leave open the possibility of swaping out the head unit on a package 6 or 7.

From Yahoo site the follow rumor has been going around relating to options....

I just had a chat with the dealer I gave a deposit to -
theoretically, I should be getting my car in early June, and there's
a bit of a catch. Apparently, Toyota is re-designating the options
packages "sometime in June" - the BC (#9) package will become what
the BG (#8) package is today (meaning that BC will no longer include
side airbags, for instance, how crazy is that); also, the AM (#7)
package will become what the AI (#5) package is today. So I don't
really know which options will be which when my car is ordered,
although they expect to have more detailed info soon. In the end, I
told him that the side airbags were the only feature I *really* cared
about, as I carry kids in my car, so he should order accordingly...

Soooo.... Opt. 9 and side air bags are history????
    Can anyone else verify this?

Verify? I couldn't even find the rumor to which you referred on the Yahoo site. What's the title of the thread?

Also, if this pans out, what is rumored to be the top package. If the BC becomes the BG, it not only loses the side airbags but anti-theft, VSC, HID, fogs, and HomeLink.

I am going to post the entire message from there.... that way I won't cut something potentially important...

The problem is that according to Toyota's information, the HomeLink in the Prius doesn't support rolling codes at all. It's not a matter of programming it.

Note that the standard audio system in the #7 does not have a cassette player. I cannot tell from your post if you are aware of this, or if it matters to you. The standard audio system has fantastic audio quality, though.

I took a letter to my salesman today indicating that I would accept a package 9. I cited the IIHS report and various things I picked up on PriusChat.
