Keep hearing adverts for Peugeot on the radio. Claims to be the UKs most reliable car according to the survey detailed here...

Peugeot Ranked No.1 [Most Reliable] Car Brand

Why does this survey disagree with just about every other survey I can find, which typically rank Toyota in the top two, next to Honda?

You already answered your own question: because somebody found a way to twist the numbers into something fit for an advertisement.

If a given survey doesn’t give you the results you want, you just cook up a fresh one. Then you repeat it with slightly different questions until your sponsor appears to win it.

JD Power has built an industry out of this. On the public side, they have surveys with names like “6-month quality perception” and “defect count ranking” but on the inside the same tests have names like “The one Toyota always wins” and “The one Ford always wins” to make it easy for their sales force.

I heard of owner's satisfaction survey: within the Toyota brand the 4Runner led, but I think so much of that rides on individual preference. Towing capacity, mpg, cargo capacity, ease of maintenance, and so on.

    Here's POWER's own write-up - same info, more detail:
    2019 UK Vehicle Dependability Study | J.D. Power .

In some ways this isn't surprising that TOYOTA is down (up in numbers). My TOYOTA is my first ever car with 2 warranty claims and 2 recalls in the first 2½ years. But I am a little surprised with Peugeot - over the years it's had it's problems - must have improved.

The only other cars I've owned which were close with too many warranty claims were 1977 - another French car, a Renault with 2 warranty claims, and a 1996 Mazda with 2 warranty claims.

Since then, I've either had none or just minor issues (eg the aftermarket driver's floor mat on the KIA which, seeing bought new with the car was covered by the same warranty). My previous 2 cars, FORDs, had none (and both had a PEUGEOT/FORD Diesel engine).

Numbers get tricky when every car is better than average, and each car is #1 in its segment.

    Hmm..Toyota Corolla or Peugeot?
Which would I expect to be more reliable?

I don't care what the survey says....I'm going with the Corolla.
