I just bought a 2010 Prius and feeling the audio is lack luster.

Now you do not have to all out like I did, but the fact that you have a Level II Base model makes things a whole lot easier to upgrade. ;)

Really why is that? I was thinking just replacing the factory speakers with better ones and adding an amp and two either 10 or 12 inch sub's just not sure what brand to go with

The JBL Units has factory amp and it's a 2 ohm system, but you won't have to deal with that. The head unit really is poor quality and the weak link, so while quality speakers will make it sound "better", it's like running an old P4 2GB RAM Computer with a GTX 690 video card if you know what I mean. I like the Hertz speakers a lot. Listened to many others but nothing came close. I found the JL Digital amps the best bang for the buck quality wise. If you are just doing the speakers and sub/s, look at the HD 900/5 or the HD 700/5 so one amp does everything. Use active cross-over 2-ways or three ways in the front and coax in the back. Base blockers like used on the factory fronts are just a cheap low quality substitute used to save money in manufacturing. The 10" sub I have will light up the neighborhood and is crystal clear...no buzz and rattle kids seem to like so much.

Going to work now...will check in tomorrow.

I've thought about changing the head unit out but I like how the factory unit is nicely tied into the steering wheel audio controls.

In my Album you can see ASWC-Steering Wheel Controls listed. That is how my HU ties in. If you had the bluetooth, which the 2010 II does not, there is another on.
