Vote, and if your answer is 'no,' you know what to do!
Addendum: I have been reminded that sometime in the MY 2007 run the pump was improved and replacement is not necessary. Probably best not to vote if you are in this happy group.

Not all Gen II inverter coolant pumps are under the recall. I suggest you change the wording of your 1st choice in the poll.

I changed mine last summer, the car coded at the Opera on 285 going uphill on the way back to SFe from Espanola. Thank you Optima D51 for getting us home.

Good point, I forgot that an improved pump was included in the last production run (or thereabouts) of the Gen 2 Prius. I'll add an addendum to my OP, but the poll cannot be edited.

Did the recall - took advantage of the appointment to add in a few little things that I wanted done, as well, such as the PCV valve, changing of the coolant, and an alignment.

The recall is for the 2004 thru early 2007 models.

According to Luscious Garage's blog, although the later cars have not been recalled for pump replacement, their inverter pumps still experience failures:

"you can tell the updated design from the original by the color of the mounting base (black is original, silver is updated) though late models with the updated design (silver base) have also experienced failures."

Because my pump was replaced early-on after failing, I'm waiting a bit longer to have the pump replaced under recall. I'm not absolutely certain they'll even replace it again. It seems that high-mileage cars, even if not recall-eligible, might benefit from pump replacement.

I don't think that black vs. silver base is a useful distinction. My 2004's original pump had the silver base and was subject to the recent LSC.

I'm sure there must have been plenty of speculation, but I'll ask here anyway.
    Why are the pumps failing?
    Inadequate design or inadequate parts?
How is the new pump different?
    Thanks
    Charlie

I didn't notice any issues with it, but the pump was replaced under recall.

The gas pedal was modified on the same visit, at the dealer's insistence.

Parts are generally supplied via contract. The inverters may have been from a different supplier, and Toyota noticed too many issues - thus, the recall.

I said "No" to the pedal thing. No problem.

    Hyo,
The dealer insisted to gain more warranty work. I'm surprised you did not tell them to jump.

I did the work DIY to prevent potential problems. When the recall was announced, I sent Toyota a copy of my receipt for the pump, and a letter telling them that I had replaced the pump myself, and could they please reimburse me for my parts cost. They sent back a letter asking for a note from my mechanic (on his letterhead (?!?!)) saying why the pump was replaced.

I called their help line, chided them for not actually reading the letter I sent, and asked them to reconsider. Got a check about 6 weeks after covering the cost of the pump.

Now if they can only elevate the barking brakes to a recall so I can get that fixed...[IMG]

Had the recall done during the last oil change, the dealership didn't even bat an eye.
