or trunk for my American friends.

I'm assuming you also have them in your Gen 4s across the pond, but what is the point of them? They don't appear fit for purpose.

See pic. If I have a normal shopping bag, the hooks are essentially useless for keeping the bag 'stable'

If I have a tiny little plastic bag, the hooks work brilliantly.

Are bags in Japan small, hence this flawed design for rest of world?

Yeah, those hooks are too low to be much good with the grocery bags I use.

They are meant for small shopping plastic bags and not much more. As per user manual it seems they are mainly meant to holding the deck board in place when lifting it (page 538 of the US manual/ 496 of German manual), and as a "side effect" to be used as hooks for shopping bags (page 535 of US manual / 493 of the German version).
Otherwise said, it seems they needed a deck board holder and ended up making grocery bags hooks too...

FWIW I purchased two collapsible storage boxes for use in the back of our Prius v for putting shopping bags in after a trip to the grocery store. In my case we bought them at a local Sam's Club here is the US. They work well for us and take up minimal space when collapsed.

I'm reminded of the cargo blocks that Volkswagen offers, to help with this:

Those wouldn't work if you've got the Cargo Tray Plus (which I have, or I'd probably have a set of those) or a similar rubber mat setup, but it should work with the carpet cargo mat - basically, you get four blocks that attach using velcro, and be put anywhere in the cargo area that's needed to create a corner of a cargo box.

I don't get bags at my grocer. I take my own. I thought those hooks might be useful for the plastic bags you could get before the laws changed here. But I've never tried them. I carry an empty cooler in the back of my car. That gives me plenty of space for the cold stuff and fresh produce I buy. Dry items don't move around all that much. My grocery runs are 40 to 50 miles one direction.

i see the bolt comes with an optional fold up storage tray for the boot, pretty good idea. i've never been able to make good use of the toyota cargo net.

I actually enjoy the trips. It's a day out for me. I get to see people. Real live people..... not faces on my television.

I thought these were called "curry hooks" in the UK? That is, they are meant to keep your little bag of take-away curry (or similar) from swinging around in your boot on your way home.

I purchased an expensive piece of electronics a few years ago, in a nice shiny cardboard box. It slid back and forth across the back of the Prius banging loudly into each side as I drove home.

Now I keep a large square of that rubber mesh used for cupboards and tool boxes laying on the carpet. Things don't slide around back there any more. ;)

I also keep a bungee cord net hooked to the "D" rings in the back. Helps to hold things in place when I drive with enthusiasm.
