    No kidding!

What's interesting about buying Energy Star rated appliances is, the consumer *doesn't have to make any sacrifices* to be green. The groceries still get cold, and the fridge is as big as is "needed."

    But...

What would these same people do if, in order to buy an Energy Star rated appliance (again using the refrigerator/freezer example), they were required to get one smaller than their old non-Energy Star model/one with fewer features/one which is more expensive? I'll betcha that most consumers would go back to getting what they want, especially if there's no rebate involved.

In my opinion, surveys like this really aren't much of an insight; it's easy to be an environmentalist when you're not called upon to make any sacrifices.

Sadly, that's what it's gonna take to save our arses. The good news is that we're making some progress (CFLs, State RPSs, etc). That and it's slowly creeping into our dim collective awareness... slowly.

"The survey also found a significant increase in the number of people who consider environmental issues to be among the top problems confronting the world. In Brazil, the percentage jumped to 49 percent in 2007 from 20 percent in 2002. And even in the United States, concern about the environment has risen to 37 percent from 23 percent in 2002."

    Wow, a whole 37%.

    In denial or just stupid?

Most people think about it, but when acting requires dipping into the pocket book many are left behind for various reasons. In the ideal world the government would have to subsidize more unless maybe they increase gas taxes or transfer some of the gas subsidies to other stuff. However, not sure the government has enough cash in the budget to do this or what the effect on our economy would be.

I wish they would increase the solar panel credits. $2k is diddly on a 3-6 kw system. :p
