Prius at 190K miles, worth to buy?

    I am now in the market for Prius, and i am considering one of the 06 white color. However, i am a bit concern about the mileage as it is now around 190k miles on it.

    Considering the age of the car, is this mileage too much? What need to be serviced/checked or replaced if get this car?

    Yes you should be concerned. After you put only 10k miles on it, it'll be over 200k. Are you good at fixing cars?

    I am moving from Camry & Highlander. This will be my first hybrid car.

    The main concern is this car having nearly 200k miles on it. Toyota design end of service life on a Prius is 180k miles. So I'll leave it up to you to decide if it should be a concern.

    Many people that buy these cars at this type of mileage know how to work on them. If you are not good at working on cars, I would get one with much less mileage.

    Other than the service life from Toyota, what else should i concern? Transmission? Battery? Engine itself?,...

    At this type of mileage, would it affect any performances of the car?

    Well let's just say you had to bring the car to the dealer because something failed. Since this is beyond the service life of the car, anything can fail. This is the type of money you would be spending.

    Engine - $5000
    Transmission - $5000
    Inverter - $4000
    HV Battery - $4000
    Struts/Shocks - $1000+

    If you can stomach any of those repairs at any given time, then you can proceed with purchasing the car with that type of mileage.

    One more thing, at this type of mileage, which part of car has the highest proportion of failing?

    The HV battery has been known to fail around the 8-10 year mark, regardless of mileage. Engine holds up pretty well but burns oil. Transaxle can fail (but still not a high percentage) because of the electric motors inside that charges the HV battery. Inverter isn't a huge problem. shocks and struts a given at that mileage. Engine water pump known to leak, but isn't a big leak.

    You still have many things on this car.

    AC
    Combination meter
    MFD screen
    Brakes

    The lists goes on......

    I'm no expert, but I would guess a Corolla with similar mileage would be a lot cheaper to fix.

    I agree with bisco, check the service history. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one at that mileage if the price was right, has a new HV battery, has all service records, original owner, and has interior and exterior in great shape and never in a major accident. Otherwise, I would move on. But then again, I am very comfortable working on my 06 with 162k.

    It's hard to give advice with little info on you and your situation. is the car going to be your primary car, how much does it cost? we have many drivers in our home and many cars we would not buy for our primary car that are great as teenagers car. If I had to choose between a prius for 5,000 or another car I would probably go for a non hybrid if it is my primary car.

    The question the OP posted on the title is if it's worth it to buy a car with 190k miles. Without knowing the full details of the car's service history, the answer is NO. It's already passed it's designed service mileage.

    190k- Damn. It would have to be very, very well priced. To be honest I don't know if I'd ever buy a car with that mileage. "End of service life, at 180k" means it's already 10k into borrowed time. Any one of the aforementioned items could break, and " there goes the deal"


    I live in NY. There's a lot of these cars around here priced from 8-15 k ( gen 2) or 15k plus (gen 3)

    With low , <70k mileage.

    End of life at 180k?...

    I've read a lot of long mileages (300k +) with sensible maintenance and low faults/fails.

    If ATF oil changed at 100k, and service records at official dealer, at a fair price, I would not skip.
