I recently bought this used 2012 Prius but today when driving home we noticed this number under the battery that shows how many miles left on battery. We have never seen this before is this a bad sign? Also the battery really isn't going up or down only the number and very slightly from where it is currently is, it does show a green battery.

    Thanks

Looks like you bought a Prius Plug-In (colloquially known as PiP or Plug-in Prius).

If you want number to go up, you could charge the car at home. It should’ve come with a 120V cable. It’ll take 3 hours on 120V (1.5 hour at a public charging station).

Alternatively, you could just keep driving it as a regular Prius in hybrid mode.

you have a plug in prius as the model in your avatar, so can i assume you know what a plug in prius is?

did it come with an owners manual?

no, 5.4 miles is not a bad sign, it means you can drive approximately that far on electricity, with no engine use.
it will always display miles as long as you have wall charge left.
when it runs out, it becomes like a regular prius, with the charge going up and down, and no miles showing.

the only way to get miles to show (filling the battery) besides plugging in, would be to go down a very long hill, to regenerate enough electricity.
