OK. I've let the Prius experience guide me in a strange sort of way in trying new things, meeting new people and listening to new music (some of this documented on other threads). I think the Prius has caused me to become a little more de-stressed and laid back and not such an uptight person.

With respect to music, I've gotten caught up in "trip-hop" music, for example a fellow named "Blockhead" leading the way and being on my current playlist (this fellow has expertly sampled Lucy calling Charlie Brown a Blockhead in the opening song of one album).

I've also strangely enough become caught up in Norwegian & Finnish (and Swedish) musicians, it ain't the folk music I always expected, some great music there (Royksopp, Jimi Tenor etc.)

What I'm looking for is some more laid-back, cruising, psychedelic type music that seems to go so well while driving the car.

    Any suggestions?

psychedelic type cruising music? first thought jumped to Pink Floyd. don't know if that's what you had in mind... we popped them into my husband's car's cd player the week we drove across the state to take care of last-minute wedding stuff and we were more relaxed than usual. kinda needed it during wedding preparations... :)

btw, your avatar cracked me up!

Massive attack rules. Check out "disolve girl."

You may also want to try Kraftwerk and Deltron 3030

Not exactly trip hop, but one of my favorite bands is Poi Dog Pondering, who is currently in a techno/soul phase with references to their acoustic roots. Definitely feel good music. The album "In Seed comes Fruit" was very well mastered and makes even the Prius audio system sound like it has some bass.

Another favorite album of mine is Ry Cooder and V M Bhatt's "A meeting by the river". An amazing combination of Indian sitar and Western Blues Guitar music that just works great. And a very good recording as well.

Kev is a Prius owner and DJ. He mixes his own stuff and it's pretty darn good is you're into techno/dance.

OK, back in town catching up. Never thought I'd get so many good suggestions!

I use a service from Real Networks called Rhapsody that has a lot of this stuff. $10 / month pretty much gets me a bunch of stuff I can stream and listen to all day... Need to pick and choose what to burn for the Prius commutes...

    Thanks!

word has it that you can get my album ("your domestic problems are completely solved") on rhapsody, although i don't subscribe so i never checked :)
as for downtempo-y stuff, i recommend:
    delerium (try "karma")
    banco de gaia (try "igizeh")
two of my favorites, also several of the suggestions above.

Now that I have XM in the Prius, I've caught myself listening to New Age. :)

And try Depeche Mode's "Ultra." Perfection. Have chills and tingles from listening to it.

A couple more artists' hats to throw in the ring, if you're looking for some good ambience:

Enigma (particularly their first four albums)
    Deep Forest
    Dead Can Dance
Orbital (if for no other reasons than the tracks Doctor Who?, The Box, and Halycon + On + On)

Also, any of the collections from the publoc radio program, Hearts of Space would work quite nicely.

One song that invariably makes its way into any 'cruising' playlist is NyQuil Driver, by They Might Be Giants

On the road trip I just took, the instrumental music offered freely by the artists here was also quite good. I reccomend it to anyone that likes good ambient music.

    Enjoy, I hope!
