Prius driver death or road rage or how not to behave

A Prius was involved and after a week in the hospital, the driver was taken off of life support. But it could have been any vehicle ... nothing about the Prius made this happen:

New Year's Eve I was driving on an access road looking at signs when a car that had been following, sped around, beeped and slowed down to get my attention. Dark with tinted windows, I couldn't tell what the driver was about so I smiled and waved. The driver sped off and I proceeded with my errand. Then I read this story, which comes close to 'road rage.'

I wasn't there and we only have one report. "Rashomon" teaches that we need to be skeptical about reports. But this reads more like a tragedy and offers lessons about controlling one's emotions.
