Just curious, but why do you want to buy a lug nut?

They are Toyota specific and pretty pricey. I believe Gorrila sells them so you can go to their website and look up your car.

 

Perhaps he means he's buying a socket for his lug nuts... and not the lug nut itself?

 

you can't find identical replacement lug nuts for the Prius, the $2 ones they sell at the dealership aren't as nice looking as the Japanese factory lug nuts.

get a clicking torque wrench. Checker sell's a nice one with 1/2 drive for 35 bucks. Stay away from the gauge type, unless it's very high quality.

use 76-80~lb torque

 

Actually, 13/16 is a better fit than 7/8.

 

yes 7/8 is a poor choice, just went out and tried it.

 

Just rotated my tires, and a 21 mm socket seemed to fit the best for me.

 

Another vote for 21.

 

13/16" = 0.8125"
21 mm = 0.8268"

I find that a 13/16" six point deep socket works great to remove the lug nuts, and this should offer a slightly better fit than 21 mm which is the official size.

 

And what is the gauge type torque wrench exactly? And why stay away?

 

Maybe NOT that important in this thread but the Toyota OEM lug nut is special, if you have alloy wheels.

It has washers for the ALLOY WHEELS, but the tips are tapered to fasten the steel wheeled donut spare. The tapered area is very small, so I put standard tapered lug nuts in the trunk for use with the donut.

 

Yep, 21 mm and 13/16" are close enough that either is suitable. I actually use a 13/16" wheel brace to remove my lug nuts, and to spin them back on. I use a 21 mm socket + torque wrench just to tension them. The 13/16" is a slightly more snug fit. Personally I'd use that for the torque wrench too, except that my socket set is metric.

They're actually called a "torsion beam" type (or just "beam" type). The clicker type are easier to use. The beam type are mostly outdated now, but can still be quite usable if you own one.

I've used both types and definitely prefer the clicker. The beam type has the advantage that you don't have to pre-tension/de-tension the adjustment spring before/after usage. But the disadvantage that you need to be able to position the wrench so that you can clearly see the gauge from a reasonably straight-on angle during usage. This is a major disadvantage in some situations.

 

I see, thanks for the answer. I asked because in fact I got one beam type. It was 4 times cheaper than a clicking one.
